Interesting, I shall have to talk to my father about this! Great grandads were in WW2 and step grandfather was in Korea.

One had his leg blown off by a mine on DDay and was rescued by a German medic.

    • was rescued by a German medic.

can you add more to the story. Sounds interesting

I don't know more than that I'm afraid, never met the man unfortunately. Maybe I will after I chat with Dad tonight and maybe we can get some records!

An interesting tidbit, after the war they made 3 wheeled triangular cars out of the front part of some German fighters (messerschmitts I think) and one crashed into an old guy's hedge. He was a veteran and he thought the Germans were attacking again and he held up the driver with a pitchfork!

A German medic wow, Just proves there are good people on both sides of any war. Unfortunately people see things really black and white these days

Its surprisingly crap. I looked up multiple records Ive seen myself through the war museum that are completely absent from this database.

    • Yep, I put in my great grandfathers exact 4-part name and got nothing.

Worse still, his WW1 pension records are available on the "regular" Ancestry!

      • same here

And my grandfathers service record was available on the National Archive (recordsearch.naa.gov.au) but not on here.

Nothing against you OP! Thanks for the notification.

Many thanks indeed for sharing this. I was able to locate my Dad's file from WWII which also included photos… Very grateful

  • Grandpa punched Hitler!

  • There's better UK and Australian government sources for military records - although you usually have to pay something.

I found it worth the money to satisfy my curiosity. My grandfather would not talk about it. Even if he did, I was 9 when he died and would not have understood the impact of being amid the horror, including being wounded four times plus the illnesses suffered (enteric and PTSD, which was then known as 'shell shock').

  • Looking at all the countries America bombed and destroyed …. Very long list
