  • Is this any good? In the market for a sound bar as I cannot hear anything from the crap speakers in the old Samsung TV.

JBL are generally pretty good, but don't know about this one. Look up some reviews. If nothing else, it will be much better than your TV speakers, but I've generally heard that a centre speaker is really useful for hearing dialogue, so at least 3.X.

        Super useful comment

So the 3.1 means 3 speakers (left right center) in soundbar and 1 sub. And 2.1 would mean just 2 speakers (left+right) and 1 sub. Wish they explained all this info in the description

    • Good is subjective.
This is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than your Samsung speakers, there is no comparison. The sound bar is your centre channel.

      • The sound bar is your centre channel.

        huh?

        • That's the purpose of a sound bar.It does exactly the same thing as the centre channel speaker.

@DeeTrance: a soundbar is just a compact all-in-one version of a traditional speaker setup.
so a 2.1ch soundbar only has left and right channels (and in this case a separate sub), it doesnt have the centre channel.
you would need a 3.1ch soundbar to have the centre channel

            • @elcap: A soundbar is designed for vocals and serves the same purpose as a centre channel.

@DeeTrance: I am not so sure about that. A soundbar is stereo, and intended to provide some degree of spatial sound. A soundbar is for all the sound, including music, dialogue, etc., whereas a centre speaker is almost entirely just for dialogue. Centre speakers are often not full-range for this reason. Centre speakers got added when Dolby Surround Pro Logic came out.

    • Main difference is that tv speakers generally don't do lows well at all. So you miss all the deep bass, including low-frequency effects (LFE).
