Manual Coffee Grinders for Pourovers - Kingrinder/Timemore?

Hi OzBargain team,

I am pretty happy with my espresso setup but looking to delve further into the pour over world, currently have a Mignon Manuale and am thinking of pairing it with a hand grinder due to limited bench space. I thought the Mignons are fiddly enough to adjust that swapping from espresso to pour over constantly might just be the worst decision I can make.

Are there others in this same predicament and can recommend options? Online readings suggest the Timemore C2/C3 and more recently I have come across the Kingrinder K2/K4/K6 which may be the better option.

OzB history shows the K4 being on sale in June and July at a very good price, I wonder if it would return again for Black Friday.

Appreciate any feedback. Cheers

  • Go look up 1zpresso K series grinders (I have the K-Max), Commandante quality at half the price.

    • Thank you for the recommendation, I think the 1zpresso k series price range is a bit higher than what I am targeting - but will keep in mind

All good. Also as someone who's wasted money on his share of cheap and cheerful grinders, my advice is to save a little more and buy right buy once. Obviously wouldn't be saying this if the price difference is like a few grand but for a couple hundreds more I think it's worth the investment.

That's not to say Timemore is no good; I've heard good things about them too.

  • Same here, keeping an eye out for K6 in the sales as people have said it has previously been as low as $89ish, currently $148 and dropped to around $125 recently, but hoping for it to be lower. A few people have commented the Kingrinder is of comparable quality to the mid-range 1zpresso's and better than the equivalent priced timemores. I like the external dial adjustment idea.

Just opened my Brightsidecoffee delivery this morning and fresh beans, what a difference from supermarket! Hand grinder to use in the office right before drinking is next on the list.

    • Can't beat the smell of freshly roasted beans, bought a bag locally yesterday and am letting it rest few days before I dial it in!

Hopefully there's some good sales during BF!! Just conflicted as Ali 11.11 is happening earlier, not sure to commit there or to wait (and hope) for the BF sales.

1Zpresso owner here, and also Eureka Mignon Manuale…and a cheaper hand grinder. We also have one of those spice grinders that supposedly does coffee as well by simply smashing the beans with blades - yeah, nah, don't do that to yourself - not even for french press!

1Zpresso was my first grinder capable of a truly good grind. Bought the Eureka after I got sick of using my arms (though in reality, it's not all that much quicker).

My wife likes french press…there is no way I'm adjusting the Eureka back and forth for that. Actually, I'm not even adjusting the 1Zpresso, which I have set for decaf espresso atm.

We have a cheaper hand grinder that my wife uses for french press. I don't see french press as being quite so demanding as espresso, so the cheap conical ceramic does the job I think. Have thought of getting her something better though.

Yes…messing with the settings is a pain. The 1Zpresso units will go back and forth with a lot more precision than does the Eureka Mignon though. The Mignon is a nice grinder, but I don't find that adjustments are as precise as my 1Zpresso hand grinder (ie…coming back to a setting after changing it doesn't seem to always land in the same spot on the Mignon)!

Unfortunately, 1Zpresso did rocket up in price after initial release. I've been eyeing the Kingrinder myself…I half expect them to go the same way.

    • I did print 3d addons to the mignon to show a scale… but it's still a pain! Thanks for the commentary, will definitely look for a separate grinder for this pourover journey.

I've been very happy with my Timemore C2 which I upgraded from an OG Hario Slim; grind consistency after the upgrade is amazing.

I can't imagine there is a huge benefit to jump to those $150-$300 hand grinders, unless you plan on grinding for espresso.

    • Hiya, did you ever consider modding the C2 with an aftermarket scale to have more adjustment increments?

I only grind for pourover and aeropress and find that I only need to go one or two clicks in either direction for a new bean or brew type.

From memory I usually go 1 click finer for aeropress and back to "default" for pourover. I'd then maybe go one click coarser if I bought a darker roast; but 99% of the time I'm buying light->medium roasts so I don't find it necessary.

    4 or 5 speed?

I have the K2, only chose the K2 over the K0 for bigger burrs and capacity. Exclusively use it for pourover/aeropress. Strongly would recommend!

    • thanks, did you have any regrets about the outer adjustment or not really an issue as once you dial in its left as is?

      • +1

No, honestly no regrets about outer adjustments.

        • awesome, thanks for the feedback :) Now to see which one goes on sale first!
