  • For that price you'd want to compare it to the Noco range of battery jump starters which have 10s of thousands of reviews on Amazon and 4.5+ stars.

  • This thing was a lifesaver for myself and family members with dead batteries in the middle of nowhere. Highly highly recommend.

    • I suppose it is unsafe to keep it in the car forever? Because of the temperature.

        Depends on the car.

I've owned cars where items kept in the spare wheel well remain cold even after the car has been parked in the sun for days during a heatwave, probably due to proximity to the petrol tank and because the car is painted white.

Other cars, every piece of metal and plastic still feels hot during the night, and a soft drink can might explode if left inside during the day. Those cars were painted black or other dark colours that readily absorb sun.

        "Results may vary"

Like all batteries, these things have an expiry date and should be topped up with a charger every 3-6 months. If they go completely flat even once they may never work again.

I bought an "E-Scorpion II" jump starter in June 2015 and used it many times over the years, particularly during COVID when family cars weren't driven much. I used it in June this year and it worked fine, but last week its battery pack started bulging out of the casing. Eight years isn't bad, it only cost $99.

  • Strange but true, in the wheel well can often be the hottest spot. Boot facing sun, sun reflecting heat off bitumen onto black underside. Did a lot of test one day. Got all the specs somewhere and it was pretty scary to see a lot of the temps. Only did it on one car cause we all got too hot… ;)

    • True. Some wheel wells and car boots also run right next to the catalytic converter and get really really hot while driving. Completely depends on the overall design of the car.

Every car is different, only way to know is go for a long drive, park in the sun on a hot sunny day, and check temperatures of all the nooks and crannies where a battery bank might be safely stored. Then try to remember where you put it when it's needed, hoping it's easily accessible for regular top-up recharges.

I set 3 monthly reminders on my calendar to top-up all my battery gadgets, and keep a spreadsheet noting where everything is stored to remind me.

      • I just tell everyone to leave it behind the drivers seat… that way i know where it is, and if it catches fire the whole thing (car probably too) is toast anyway…
