How Would You Value Guitars to Sell?

Hi

I’m helping someone sell their guitars. They have concerns about being scammed. How can I find out market value if nothing equivalent is for sale used? Music stores have not been useful.

if its a unique/rare piece what about starting with minimum your friend would be happy with, + say 15% on top.
    If it sells great.
    If haggle, got room.

    scammed

Cash and cash only. Bring a friend along. If you are in VIC there are some dedicated 'safe' zones outside some 24 hr cop shops for selling stuff online.

They are relatively hard to sell for any decent money in my experience.

I sold a guitar amp and foot pedal i paid 3k for to a bloke for 1.5k.
There were not similar guitars online for sale, so no reference price point.
Music shops valued the package at $800 (but they wouldn’t buy it out right, they offered to try sell it for me in store for $100 commission)
I said no thanks and just left it up online.

It took me about 3 months to sell but found someone eventually. Dude looked like he would kill me when he rolled in, but was friendly as could be.
He happily gave the cash before even seeing/checking the guitar.

Just get em to show the cash before you hand over the gear and you will be right.

    Cash is easy.
People that are gonna snatch and run don’t usually go for big items. Meet in public at a copshop if your nervous.

Tldr: sell it for cash online for what ever you think its worth. Its worth what ever someone is prepared to pay for it.

  • What is the guitar?

It's a stringed musical instrument, with a fretted fingerboard, typically incurved sides, and six or twelve strings, played by plucking or strumming with the fingers or a plectrum - but that's not important right now.

I hope it's not mine that was stolen a few years ago.

I'm selling a few rarely used guitars at the moment aimed at intermediate players.

I used reverb sold items in AUD as a rough guide if there are no comparable items on eBay, Fakebook or scamtree.

I never expect my asking price because the buyer will want a deal - just like I did when I purchased them.

List the make, model and conditions here. Plenty of players on ozbargain who may be able to set a rough price.

    What is copshop?

  • If they are pretty expensive, some stores will sell on consignment and give you a rough price. Depends on your location. But search vintage guitar stores or used guitar stores in your area. For example Melbourne, Found Sound, Echo Tone, music swap shop, guitar colonel. There are also some facebook groups you can post photos too and sometimes they will help depending on there elitism.

  • Hmm what brand is it? All this advice is moot if you're talking about an Aldi guitar.

  • Where are you located and what guitars, amps, pedals, etc is he selling?

Aside from the options above vintage guitar stores can be a place to ask BUT what you are selling needs to be desirable to the vintage market

Pretty lazy of OP not top put location, (but that seems to be the norm on Ozb) and also if OP had done that we would google an answer for them, cos obviously google is broken in his house. Ppl do proper appraisals for $$, which 'if' these guitars ARE valuable is worth every cent and the cost can be added to the sale and a certificate provided if required.

Could be a mythical Ozbargainer who has an L series fender and has NFI what they have?

…. but more than likely someone who thinks their 7 string Ibanez is desirable to anyone other than a Korn, Limp Biscuit, et al. fan

  • I suggest if you want help here you might at least want to provide brands and model numbers. There are alot of guitar enthusiasts on ozbargain

    • You're asking for the impossible

  • Did the person buy the guitars themselves? They should at least have some idea of what they're worth.

The problem with 2nd hand guitars, especially acoustic guitars, is that they can have all kinds of musical defects that are not apparent at first glance. The wood can shrink and expand with humidity changes, and the wood can bend or change shape over time. Many guitars have a problem with intonation, where a string might sound in tune when it's open or on the first few frets, but up on the 12th fret it's no longer in tune. This makes it impossible to play any music at all that sounds in tune all the way through. If they don't have a problem with this when they're new, they can develop this problem over time from changes in the wood. Then there also may be problems with buzzing strings at certain frets, etc. The older the guitar is, the more likely it will have problems like this, unless it is owned by a professional who knows how to maintain a guitar and who regularly pays a luthier to service and correct the guitar. Keep in mind, new guitars can have these problems too, especially cheaper ones.

Anybody negotiating a price for a 2nd hand guitar without playing it first is silly.
