Home Electrical Supplies (Switch Covers/Face Plates)

Just moved into a new place with about 20 badly yellowed face plates/covers for switches and gpos.

They're about $5 at Bunnings for Deta which I've heard mixed feedback on. Clipsal ones seem to be around $7.50 at directwholesale and HPM (which is maybe better than Deta?) around $5 at sparky direct.

Are there any other sources for cheap electrical supplies like these? Will likely need to replace some downlights in future too.

Check what brand your current faceplates/switches are. If I remember correctly there is a subtle difference in the shape of the hole between the Deta/HPM plates and Clipsal ones.

Sparky did some work recently and used another brand I had not heard of (probably cheaper). Will try and find the name.

Are you replacing the whole switch or the face plates only? If it is the latter then you don't have many options as you need to get plates for the existing brand and model as face plates from different brands aren't interchangeable in most cases.

    • Good shout, for some reason I thought these were standard sizes. Will take a closer look at any drawings they have, but sounds like I might be stuck with the pricier clipsal.

  • Deta will fit Clipsal plates generally without any issues. HPM is unique and won't interchange. Sparky direct is cheap but always get you with postage.

    • $11 postage? Not really world ending…..

      • The point is that when you're adding that to the total cart. You may as well buy it here and get it straight away.

OP is buying 20 units, spreading $11 over that is 55 cents each. Depends on what you value your time worth I guess.

    • Good to know. It's just a cover, I can't imagine the difference in quality between a fairly basic piece of injection moulded plastic will be substantial.

just go to an electrical wholesaler or use sparkydirect

  • Can't you just paint over them?

    • This is actually a pretty economical solution. A spray paint with a gloss finish would not look out of place.

    • This is the ozbargain answer I needed. Will buy a can and give one a go to see how it looks.

  • There's a chemical process, retrobrighting - but it may be cheaper to get new ones.
