Best Fresh Gravy You Can Buy Separately from Eatery in Western Sydney?

Anyone know of any good fish and chip shops that still sell gravy separately?

Local closed down and now I'm looking at alternative places to get gravy.

edit: i still dream about the gravy from penrith panthers bistro like 20 something years ago if you were there mate you definitely still dream about it

  • In a side note/follow up question - has anyone bought the giant tubs of maggi rich brown gravy powder from wholesalers or similar and tried that? how does it go?

    • Sorry it's not directly related but i tried gravox gravy pouches recently the microwave one and it was bad.. Tasted burnt acidic bitter.

      • Are you sure you didn’t overcook it? I’ve had that before and whilst it was average at best it didn’t taste bitter or burnt.

    • The maggi gravy is god tier

      • Yeh I’ve heard good things but not game enough to get stuck with 2kg of the stuff!

It's pretty good for an instant gravy. The flavour is decent, not AMAZING, but it's pretty good and it's super easy to make - 10g per 100ml of water and throw it in the microwave. I also don't take much notice of the best before date, my tub expired in August and I haven't noticed any difference yet, I'll give it another year before it goes in the bin by which point I might be halfway through it.

    • I like the knorr one better. Can get it from amazon. Needs to be spiced up a little to get it singing.

  • Vaccinated or unvaccinated gravy?

    • which one will kill me less

      • You tell me…

        • well the gravy i had when i was a kid from penrith panthers that tasted so divine i drank it out of a chip cup has not killed me yet so that one.. i am pretty sure it was unvaccinated but thick and hot and a little bit salty but flavoursome

i dream about the penrith panthers old style bistro where you pushed a tray on those metal bars still to this day..

chips and gravy and a plate of veggies.. that is all i ever wanted in life

          • @AlienC: apart from
            'thick/hot/salty'

the vege gravy platter sounds the goods. A home cooked roast is up there with the best.

            • @Protractor: oh yeah definitely.. the clean up leaves less to be desired.. dont wanna clog my pipes.. i have to start embracing putting the excess oil and fats into a container or bag of some kind to be taken out with the trash..

but yeah no a good home cooked roast is honestly the end goal but very hard to devise without any pro cooks around

  • Orana in Kellyville

    • Is Kellyville technically even in western Sydney?

  • If you're that into your gravy why not batch cook a big lot of quality gravy and freeze it into cubes or something? Google espagnole sauce.

      OP is a terrible cook.
(Not a personal attack, OP said that in their last gravy topic)

      • Yep there are few things i can cook outside of an oven and air fryer and well after burning a couple dishes in the oven im staying within my skillset of microwave and air fryer and very few things with oil in a pan.. mostly veggies and eggs.

    • limited freezer space and honestly the thought of cleaning that all up makes me feel queasy.. look doing the monthly air fryer clean is all the dish washing i want to get done right now lol

but yeah mainly no freezer space unless i invest in another fridge

  • Give Paul Kelly a buzz. He has some contacts in the gravy world. To the point of nausea

    • even i know this joke is overdone

      • Not as much as the song is flogged to ear bleed level.

        • you got me listening to the song now and honestly i am just wondering why the hell australia does not have a best gravy competition.. honestly i assumed that would be a thing like the best pie award..

australia definitely needs a best gravy award.. hell i would watch judges taste it for 3 hours if they have to go through 100 gravy's

im drooling thinking about it now

nothing better to drink down than some hot thick gravy

          • @AlienC: $ chips to dunk

            • @Protractor: nothing beats chips dunked in gravy.. it's like putting mcdonalds fries in your milkshake.. a hall of fame competitor

i feel like this might be it but i am hoping we have some professional chefs in here that can maybe spill the gravy on this topic.. maybe there is a premix that is still pretty good for us plebians chefs?

might as well go all in with the 2kg one for a better unit cost price yeah? yeah?

      MAGGI Classic Rich Gravy Mix, 2kg (Makes 20 Litres, 400 Serves) Subscribe & Save: 10% $33.75 ($1.69 /100 g)

I spent about that much on food today and it was uh ok so 2kg of gravy should be ok also yeh?

      also found this

      https://www.amazon.com.au/MAGGI-Gravy-Ready-Use-1L/dp/B0B4TF…
MAGGI Gravy Ready To Use 1L
      $8.96 ($0.90 /100 g)

seems to be 5x dearer than the gravy mix $/kg but it is ready to go and most likely prepared much better

so honestly I would value it as maybe 3-4x dearer considering slight spillage or miscalculations going the mix route over ready to use route but that is just my two cents

      • just got time to check the amazon reviews for this and a lot of people saying it tastes pretty bad vinegary not like traditional gravy at all so it is a hard pass for me just thought to let people know

Golly, just when I think I have seen and read everything on OB, along comes another one.

Gravy!! FFS, the mind boggles, it truly does.

Meanwhile in news just to hand, the world is going to hell in a handbasket, Israel, Putin, Xi, Trump, global warming, housing shortage, world poverty, trigger happy Yanks, et al. We've got a bit more on our plate than a few chips 'n gravy.

Disclaimer, I always make my own gravy. Not a chef, just something my mother taught me. Better than any bought muck.

    • i mean if you want to "elevate" the conversation and talk about sheeple eye opening topics you can start your own forum thread and we can meet there

      beware of the nwo

      climate control

      5g towers

      survive the lies

      i want to believe

      etc

i think you been eating some special gravy

    • All true ,but the reality is the human race has earned it's shit filed nest.
It's a self fulfilled prophecy. No redeeming features remaining, for the clever monkeys, so we may as well discuss gravy. Nobody is concerned with petty issues like existential crises.Even less here. Covid showed how worthless we are as a species and Israel just confirms we have earned our oblivion. At least we have a 'variety' of ends. Knowing Straya, Sportsbet will run a book on which one, and the plebs will lap it up.

  • Gravox Best Ever Bangers 'n' Mash Liquid Gravy Pouch is my choice when I don't make my own. Chuck it in the microwave and it's great on anything.

    • ah ok might have to try it.. but the last gravox liquid pouch tasted pretty bad so not sure if i should try another have you tried maggi or knor or bisto by any chance

      • I used to do taste-testing for Red Galah (over 10 years ago) and that's where I first tried it. We were offered 3 flavours of 3 different brands and I was most impressed with this Gravox flavour and haven't looked for anything to replace it with.

        • Alright cool well if my 2kg of Maggi classic rich gravy mix doesn't work out or I want something new I might give it a shot

          Cheers thanks for your input
