Saw that this morning.
Seems like it's been cheaper on here but fairly limited so probably an ok price but hardlex is a bit hard to stomach on an expensive dress watch. Love the dial, can't imagine wearing gold though.
Yeah I do recall having seen it before, but I already have the Blue Moon… can't really justify getting another one. That dial is pretty amazing though.
Unashamedly yes
Even though I'd seen it before and already decided against it, I wanted to look it up again too :)
It's the sentiment that does it for me - my late father loved Seiko and Lark Whisky… Couldn't say no.
@Wafflel: Then that sounds worth it to me :)
Looks nice
hahah mineral glass
seiko never disappoints
Never disappoints , but know how to charge . The presage range has never been anything special , in my opinion anyway.
The old penny is back!
tastes like pennies
Waiting for the VB/XXXX edition, thanks.
Looks fantastic but that's a lot for a basic AF movement and mineral glass crystal.
For the same money, you can get equally as impressive looking watches with Miyota 9 series and sapphire crystal.
Which one is that for example.
I recently picked up a Smiths Trans-Global for very similar money.
They have a few colours which look very nice.
Has Miyota 9039 which is higher beat and most likely more accurate than Seiko's 4R35.
The boxed sapphire crystal looks great, too.
Sounds nice, plenty of options out there (including micro brands).
I'm glad you didn't say miyota 8000 series, I'd prefer a 4R35 and they are considered better (less noisy and can't feel the one directional rotor).
Accuracy isn't everything, but once the price is high you expect it. The 6R35 are good but feels like I'm mostly paying for the 70h power reserve. Some I have seems to come with some magnetism from storage/transportation.
otherwise get a Quartz ;).
PS. 6R and sapphire would be more like $1500 RRP.
Hey mate where do we buy Smiths TG in Australia? Thanks
@dirtyhen: Have to order from Time Factors website.
It's a bit annoying because he only opens his online store like twice a month for ordering.
"Next opening Sunday 12th November 2023 - 1400HRS [UK]"
https://www.timefactors.com/products/smiths-trans-global-prs…
Once I ordered, the watch was dispatched quite quickly and I had it in under two weeks.
@O15: Never heard of these but checked out the website. The look nice enough and seem to be good quality homages, seems to be a kickstarter or something. I'm guessing there would be a lot of hype on watch nerd forums. I still wouldn't be that comfortable spending ~A$700 plus almost $100 for shipping on a noname (which is probably still made in China. Brand recognition counts for something, that would remind me of Smith's Crisps (but a fairly English name).
People hate big brands like Seiko but they are always easy to sell later if you want a change and get most of your money back (keep the box and papers). You'd be hard pressed to sell most micro brands and homage watches for anything really (I got a few pagani I don't exactly wear much but aren't worth selling).
@G-rig: They are not Kickstarter watches but yes, they are well known by watch enthusiasts.
This is my somewhat loose understanding of the Smiths watch brand:
They were and English watch brand, founded back in mid 1800's and ceased producing watches sometime in the late 1900's.
Fun fact: Edmund Hillary wore a Smiths watch on his Everest expedition.
All of this is rather irrelevant to current Smiths watches. A British watchmaker purchased the rights to produce Smiths watches. I believe some of his current designs are reminiscent of original Smiths watches and some designs are new.
They are most likely produced in China however, as I have one which I can actually hold and not just judge from afar, I can say they are very well made.
I certainly don't hate Seiko or other big brands. I've probably put more money into watches with 'Seiko' (or some variation') on the dial than most on OzBargain.
I buy watches to wear and enjoy, not as an investment.
I have one watch from a somewhat overhyped microbrand which I could sell today for more than 2x what I paid for it. But I appreciate owning and wearing the watch more than the money I could get from it.
@O15: All good - thanks for the insight, they sound like a good brand with some nice heritage and following by the enthousiasts.
Most stuff is made in China these days and I accept it, not like you're getting a handmade Jag in British Racing Green type of thing. Even a lot of British Audio brands have been bought out or aren't made in England anymore.
Not hating on microbrands or China either, I got a Seagull (with actual ST19 movement) from Ali Express, is also a niece collectors piece.
Just find myself buying more solar-quartz these days for the conveniece and they keep great time. Nice to have some grab and go's.
Doesn't matter what you get, the main thing is that you enjoy it (just like others may enjoy other purchases), there is no right and wrong but plenty of people on forums having a whinge.
@G-rig: I would like to add a solar quartz to my collection.
It will probably be a JDM Citizen. I've seen a few I like, at different price points.
@O15: Yes no shortage of solar-quarts/ Eco-drives. Those paper dial JDM Citizens can be USD$2-4k pretty easily.. but the precision would be awesome.
One day would be nice and just trim the collection to 5 watches etc.
Puts things in perspective, this Lark dial is almost as impressive and people are up in arms over $600.
Acquired taste
I guess still not a bad price if this piece ticks your boxes
This needed the 6R movement and sapphire, but otherwise stunning dial and colour.
Yawn.
When will Seiko stop taking the piss with their customers. At just under $1000 and it still uses hardlex?
" only 1000 produced."
Yeah, Seiko has about a million "limited editions" that come out. Nothing special there. I guess 1000 is pretty low compared to say the Snoopy one, which was about 8000 and you can still get brand new this far after launch.
1000 is good and Australia only (like the Noosa sumo I got), not 6000-7000 like you say. Should still expect close to 50% off in general though, given Seikos ridiculous RRP.
Just buy a Grand Seiko instead?
Be interesting to see what is heaps better (and no doubt heaps more expensive).
That's a lot of money for a SEIKO watch. And it's only "gold plated". Would be surprised if a single OZBargainer buys one.
The Presage range has been very underwhelming lately - especially at this particular price point.
Nicotine version.
If you have a Grahams VIP Gift Voucher, it entitles you to $150 OFF the purchase price of $500 or more.
T&Cs though say
Savings off Recommended Retail Prices (RRP) and Regular Ticketed Prices.
Will it work then on a already discounted item?
No idea about this, but it's great how Shiels let you use them on sale items too. Managed to use the 60$ and 150$ off.
Transworld Enterprises is the parent company of Shiels, Grahams Jewellers and Watch Depot.
@sagacity: True, I think I knew that (from Rosebank) but just thought it was the shipping company or something lol.
Yes, it works. $610 at checkout.
If you like this general style of Seiko, the smartest buy for the money is the SNKL23J1. I've had one for years… it's beautiful, it keeps good time, and it'll outlive me.
Made in Japan, approx $200. Slap it on a nice leather strap and your search is over.
Nah there is a lot better stuff around now, that's very old (I had one, sold it, was about $115 from star watches Singapore).
Nice dial and doephine hands, but pretty old movement - no handwinding and hacking, short power reserve, tedious setting day and date, cheap rattly band with hollow end links, cheap clasp, feels cheap man. Nice though but worth about $100 and even then there are a heap more microbrands with quality parts these days.
Yes I think I got mine for about that from Star also. There's been about 25% inflation in the economy since then, so that price would be about $140 in today's money.
Yes steel band it comes with feels cheap, hence my comment about swapping it out.
Yes would feel more quality on a leather band (I had a bond NATO). It's good just hardly the same as $200+ watches and the cocktail times would feel like a big step up in quality. Prob could have kept mine but couldn't be bothered setting day date autos and got too many other ones.
@G-rig: I just really battle to understand what the extra $600 buys when it comes to these $800 and $900 Seikos. I realise that big watch nerds get a thrill out of things like an hour marking having an additional bevelled angle or whatever, but any general person who wants a good-looking, well-made automatic watch that they can wear each day can really get it all sorted for $200.
@park: That's the same argument against anything though. Why buy a big TV when you can watch the same picture on a smaller one? Why buy an expensive car when a cheaper one gets you to the same place at the same time?
What the extra gets you is a dial and colour combo that looks like almost nothing else out there. If there's one thing that Seiko does do well, it's flashy dials. Whether you think that is worth the extra dosh over a cheap beater that provides the same base functionality, is a decision only each person can make.
@Astronaut Joe: Your comparison to tv size isn't very fair… it's a different experience watching something on a much larger screen.
On your car comparison, it feels more like paying $70k for a black BMW 3 series, or $300k for a similar BMW 3 series with a very nice whiskey-coloured paintjob.
@park: @waverley I think it applies to anything.
I like how people get their back up about watches but don't get criticised for dropping a heap of a new gaming card for marginal gains lol.
@park: Yeah everyone is free to decide what is best for their tastes and budgets.
A cheap Casio would do the job. I think I got the A158WA-1 for $27 and it would keep better time.
Plenty of cocktail times can be had for For $400-500, you should ignore RRP as Seiko and citizen can be had for 50-60% as I mentioned. This one is more because it's a limited edition. So I agree it's mainly a collector's piece.
Anyway I'd spend 100-200 on a microbrand with a modern movement, sapphire crystal and quality stainless bracelet and clasp before I'd buy that SNKL23, so obviously you like the brand too. Check out the Baltany military field watches, sd1970, Pagani make some pretty good ones, etc.
Overpriced…just like the whiskey so makes sense lol
AUSTIN: Basil, this watch looks like sh!t
BASIL: It is sh!t Austin
AUSTIN: Im glad its not just me then
AUSTIN: Yeah baby, yeah!
Did Jody's video prompt you to search for it today? :)
