Comparing Mid Range TV Options?

Hi!

With black friday on the horizon, I am looking to upgrade my TV. I am looking for something 65"-75". Max is $2000, more comfortable at $1700.

So here is where I am confused with my options. There's QLED, Mini LED, sony full array, etc etc.I am confused. I took a trip to JB HiFi to compare them physically but this just confused me more. My partner has access to the samsung partner portal so I can get the 75Q60C for about $1700, but RTINGS reviewed this quite poorly for HDR. Or the Samsung CU8000 for just under $1400. I also considered the 75Q60B which was last years but reviewed better. At the low end you have the Hisense vs TCL race, but I have heard the xAU Hisense panels are just cheap and bad compared to the rest of the world. However, MiniLED provides you local dimming zones… Which hisense has the U7K coming with MINI LED which I am wondering if the advantage of the Mini LED offsets the bad panel? Obviously being AU, rtings has no review on the AU mini led. (I know there is also the U6K. I'd rather TCL in the race because of Google Tv built in. Now stepping away from that race, you also have the ebay box damaged (rather not seconds) Sony full arrays…

Having never really needed to buy a tv myself and always just taken someones hand me down, I have no brand loyalty and am very confused on what the pick is. Please ozbargain, give me the collective knowledge.

Wow, you have some serious Analysis paralysis going on here. If you put most/any of those TVs in isolation in your house, you would most likely be happy with them. You need to seperate what YOU want/need vs projecting other peoples ideas onto yourself and trying to make them fit.

What are YOU hoping a new TV does for YOU vs your old one? Why are you upgrading. What is your TV not doing for you now?
What type of content do YOU watch? (Not some reviewer)
What features / apps / streaming etc is a must for YOU? Does it need to be built in or are you using a 3rd party box?
Do you play video games on it? What console?
Where is the TV going to be / what is the watching environment ?

For example, if you watch Free to air TV (for some reason) then you are going to want a TV with a good upscaling. (Which IMO is only Sony). Most reviews won't talk about this in relation to AUS FTA. AUS FTA is notoriously poor resolution and highly compressed.

Can't handle HDR and contrast is poor. I am upgrading because I bought my first place and want a nice living room to live in.

      Sports, tv shows, movies, youtube

I would like my main unit to be built in so disney, youtube, netflix, prime, kayo are a must. I am leaning on TCL because of Google tv

Do you play video games on it? What console?

Only a switch on the main unit

Where is the TV going to be / what is the watching environment ?

Living room, roughly 3m distance. Wall mounted

  • Got 65c835 for $1200. Pretty happy

    • Oh man, thats a great deal

  • I picked up a 85p745 from the recent ozbargain post and am very happy with it despite being an entry level model. In the shop you may see a difference between high and low end models but at home you don't have that comparison. It shames my 6yo LG TV (that i paid 3x the price for) in terms of image quality and contrast.

    • Being a plain LED, hows the blacks? one thing I really am not sure on is the dimming zones

      • I wasing expecting much because it doesn't have micro-dimming, but I'm blown away by it. Much better than my old TV.

TV's are so old school. Considering getting one for a retro theme.

  • Just get the biggest OLED on a sale according to your budget. The difference in quality is huge, and is worth the compromise of smaller size.

      • 1, unless you're in a bright room.
The LG 65 CS was available for ~$2000 a while back, but with a sale + discounted gift cards, it should get you there.
