    499 from 649 is ~23% off

Probably around the typical discount that you should be looking at DJ/Myers etc.

I doubt RM is one of the ones that will hit 30% off full price, so 25% is probably the best you can get. So 23% ain't bad. But with Black Friday coming up?

    • +2

Use code YOURGIFT to receive a 50 AUD gift card along with a 400 dollar purchase . So brings down the price to 450 and then 2% cash rewards .

      • +5

That code is for beauty products only, won’t work for boots

        • +1

          My bad then sorry

  • +3

    Concrete cowboys

    • +3

Did you forget the cowgirls? Flying under the radar, and even more dangerous

  • Took 30 mins to measure my feet and umm and ahh over sizing and in that time the size I had settled on sold out.

David Jones has extended its returns and exchange policy until 31 January 2024 - "Items that are purchased in the months of November and December may be returned or exchanged up until 31 January the following year".

I would suggest buying the nearest size available and exchanging once your true size is back in stock to take advantage of the $150 off (that's what I'm doing, at least).

      • Actually after I posted that I came across this deal and got them for $454 instead

        • Hey was wondering if you could share a code with me from that deal?

          • @Pursue4: Yeah I’m also desperately after a code if you’re able to get multiple could you PM ?

    • +5

I've done online sizing for Shimano cycling shoes and they were spot on so I'm typically not against this. But for RMs, speaking from experience, I'd say it's best you go to the store and try it on to get your fit before the next one of these deals. I fell into the trap with RM online sizing and it wasn't accurate. The size G width waa too wide for me so my boots fit loose. I happened to go to the store and try the slimmer size on afterward and the size F fit like a glove. Completely different feel… Don't be like me.

      • I agree with that, I wear Dynamic Flex CC's and they are a different size/width to the rubber sole CC's.

I get that Dynamic Flex are a bit different but even my standard CC size surprised me.

      • I'm a 44 in shimano. Went for a 9G in the comfort craftsman from the Iconic deal. Chances are that's wrong but hopefully I'll get there after one return.

      • I would never buy $700 shoes without trying them on and ensuring they are perfect. Still can’t believe $700 shoes seems to be normal attire in the city nowadays, regular low cut shoes are so yesterday lol

        • Back when I bought them from an ozbargain
deal, exactly 5 years ago, they were $300 AUD from a Collier Bristow in the U.K. I couldn't let the deal pass at that price. Ahhhh, how times have changed - haven't seen a deal as good as that since (and doubt we ever will again). Given I purchased them from a department store and not R.M. Williams, I have just made do with them and didn't exchange them here at an RM for the right size. It's not a deal breaker, but could've been even better.

Ring one of the RMW factory outlets. Odds are good they will have your size, and if not they will source one and deliver for you free. $499 seems the normal outlet price.

I just picked up some comfort craftsman dynamic flex from the Toowoomba outlet for example for $499.

  • +2

shows up as $649 for me.

Edit: Add to cart and it will show up as $$499.

    • +1

Add to cart and it drops to $499

  • +1

You will also need to do separate transactions if buying more than one pair. I added two pairs to my cart and the value was only reduced to $574pp instead of $499pp.

  • Sale also includes regular craftsman and dynamic flex craftsman.

  • All gone

  • -1

Nah too expensive. 5 hush puppies (last at least 30 yrs) or 10 rivers (last at least 25 yrs) boots price.

    • +1

From what I’ve read Rivers boots last about 2 years.

    • +7

Hush puppies and Rivers are trash. Had them both, multiple times, and that was enough. The sheer amount of waste being produced is phenomenal; in time, to go get new pairs, and material waste, where the best these will break down into is toxic goo.

Never understood the RM Williams hype. I know taste is subjective, and I tried really hard to buy into this look, but it just looks really try hard and seems to be for the demographic of people with no aesthetic taste but wants to flex on overpaying for a pair of ugly shoes. These boots goes well with jeans, but I cannot believe how many people wear these with suits which looks horrendous and would be a crime in any other cities like New York / London.

    • Alot wear it actually. One clear sign is their trousers hems stuck on those huge pull tabs.

      • +1

        Yeah that's annoying af.

    • +6

$499 for boots that last 20+ years is cheap

      • +1

Is it in a glass cabinet?

      • +3

Don't forget to factor in the maintenance cost:

        • Replacement heels and soles: $165 every 2 years = $82.5 p/a
        • Replacement pull tabs: $140 every 4 years = $35 p/a
        • Replacement elastic: $140 every 4 years = $35 p/a
        • Polish and conditioner: $48 @ yearly

Comes to $200.50 per year, which can get you a really nice pair of shoes. Obviously YMMV depending on how often you wear them or where you get the repairs done, but the bill from last repair has put me off buying any more pairs.

        • +2

You can't make negative comments about R. M. Williams cult in Ozb, they be after you! Come on, its a $500 membership fee 😉

          • @boomramada: Old adage springs to mind. Better to be thought a fool than to confirm it in writing.

            • @Igaf: Enjoy your membership 😉

              • +1

@boomramada: Thanks, I've been enjoying it for the decades. Probably as long as you've been searching glass cabinets for good boots?

        • +2

Lol. I'd suggest your experience, and by inference wear/use, is anything but typical @bla….. No need to use RMW for sole/heel repairs, any decent bootmaker will do. Tip - Dubbin's cheap and a tin should last years.

        • +2

I've got 2 pairs (5 and 4 years old) that I alternate and haven't needed to do pull tabs or elastics as yet. Heels were done at my local cobbler for $48 after 4 years for the older pair.

With the polish and conditioner, isn't that with any shoe/boot? However, I don't spend anywhere near as much, also helps that if I'm walking past an RM store they will do the polish and conditioning for free (used this service perhaps at least 3-4 times for my older pair).

I used to buy leather shoes a lot more often but now it's one less thing to worry about. However, I do know some mates who need to change their heels more often due to uneven wear. So do agree YMMV depending on how you walk and whether you alternate or just have the one pair.

-The demographic of people wants to overpaying for 'ANY thing'. <= This is the decoding of this community.
In an analogy, this community is 'Keeping up appearance' in which the vast majority of people is Hyacinth who keeps the appearance at any cost; and with very few Richards, Onslows, Elizabeths, Emmets, Daisys etc who keep the reality. and there is an ongoing clash between the former and latters.

    • Yeah they just look so plain which was I guess a good thing in the early 2010s when minimalist looks were big. Also with the fact now that every finance bro and project manager wears them, they’ve just lost appeal to me especially with a $500+ price tag.

      • Because they're the only people left that can afford them?

    • +3

I wear a pair with a suit or into the office, I may have no aesthetic taste but I didn't buy them to flex on anyone I bought them because

      1. Made in Australia
      2. Really comfortable
      3. Overall quality
      4. Repairability
      5. Simplicity.

RM's are the only shoe that ticks those boxes, there are other options that are similar but they fall short in one of those. Mine are 6 years old, all I've needed to do is replace the heel and they still polish up as new.

      • They are definitely not really comfortable. It does probably tick the other boxes but I don't understand how people actually find them comfortable. Even after wearing for some time, it doesn't get better in terms of comfort.

According to https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/r-m-williams some of the quality and repairability statements might be questionable, with quality apparently going downhill in the last years.

I guess after people pay $600+ they want to justify that price and convince themselves that it was worth the price, but I tried and didn't find the boots comfortable, and have many (5+) friends who have RM and acknowledge that they are not comfortable. Very stiff.

        • +2

heres an assumption I make since you don’t own a pair - you have probably tried in store, walked around for 5s, picked up the box saw the price and goes geez that’s expensive, proceed to say it’s not comfortable to make yourself feel better lol.

          • @sauce2k: Or I purchased with a discount as a good Ozbargainer, found terribly stiff and uncomfortable to the point I couldn't give it a go for more than a few hours or days, and returned it.

Assumptions, theories… I might just be lying because 50% of people wear the brand and I don't…

I appreciate that some people might find it comfortable but that's definitely not what most people around me think about the boots. If I got $100 for every time I heard people saying "it's just ok" or "no, it's really not comfortable", I'd be able to buy a few pairs of RM Williams.

Obviously my anecdotal friends are not scientific data. I just find it funny that many people wear the brand without finding it comfortable.

            • @this is us: I literally just wore mine to Derby day and a party afterward - I'm pretty sure that was more than 12 hours straight wearing. Yeah my feet are a little sore and need a rest but show me any shoe I could do the same in for a better result, please.

FWIW I have a fair friends that have bought a pair (probably 10+) and only one had a comfort complaint and ended up being that he was sized up wrong and was given a free used for new exchange

e: for clarity the soles of my foot are a bit sore, but god knows how many steps and standing in lines I did today

            • +1

              @this is us:

found terribly stiff and uncomfortable to the point I couldn't give it a go for more than a few hours

Leather takes longer than this to wear in. And gets more comfortable after it breaks in. You simply didn't wear them long enough.

I just find it funny that many people wear the brand without finding it comfortable.

Is it also funny if I wear them and find them comfortable?

        • +2

According to (internet link) some of (your opinion) is based on internet research and you're arguing with people that actually bought/used them.

and have many (5+) friends who have RM and acknowledge that they are not comfortable

Amazing how many friends with (specific experience) of (insert current argument) contrarians seem to have. You must have wildly well dressed but slightly uncomfortable bbq's.

        • So you’ve owned a pair?

        • I own RM Williams and River chelsea boots and the latter are definitely more comfortable. Softer leather that doesnt need break in and a softer sole.

RM Williams will outlast Rivers but will still not be better value.

        • You could be right, I have seen dozens of ppl try to off load nearly new shoes in marketplace regularly, is that saying something?

          • @boomramada: Yes, it says you need to look in (more) glass cabinets rather than some arbitrary "marketplace".

        • After the two week break in they are pretty comfortable.
I bought my dark tans for $380 from iconic a few years ago and by far my most used shoe. I wear it all the time. My kangaroo tanbark is slightly more comfortable due to it being lighter though

    • -1

Taste is indeed subjective, and as your comment suggests @RolePlayer, there's no accounting for it.

    • They also get their suit pants made extra short so you can be sure to see the RM tag

      • if you go the shorter-chino style pant, you can dress them up with the boots or down with the invisi sock loafers, then the white sneakers on the weekend. So you know. It all works out.

    • How’s it ‘just looks really try hard’?

I don’t get it, are you judging the boots because people are wearing them with clothes that aren’t a match and if so, what’s that got to do with if the boots are any good or not?

Have you had a pair of them and if so, what was wrong with them?

    • I was like that. But after buying one I have now 3 comfort craftsman. Works with suits, jeans and trousers of any sorts.
Quite a flexible boot. The squared of toe shape makes it more appealing than you might think

    • Agree that wearing with a suit is not a good look.
But I have been wearing RMs nearly every day since I was twenty. Change over every ten years, just got my fourth pair.

      • +1

I'm sure RM are more than fine with a suit or any business wear, chinos, pants or jeans (colour combo pending).

I still got a pair from at least 7y ago, don't wear them much, they took about 6 months to break in but that was for the leather soles, and the pinky toes still cop it for long use. They were only $300 from an outlet but seems like the leather was harder than it should be but I'd expect comfort craftsman wouldn't need much break in. Ps the outlet shoes are usually just slightly off in colour, or have tiny scuffs etc.

        • Yep they can be a perfectly fine match for pretty much any attire - formal and informal.

  • Thanks OP, been waiting for a while to find my size at this price point. Hopefully they are as good as everyone says they are!

  • Was waiting for this to come around again. Thanks OP, got me a pair.

Does anyone have a nice belt to go with the chestnut?

    • Edit: belts are also discounted when added to cart…
  • Wish they stocked the Tambo

    • +1

      Same here. Damn wide feet!

  • +2

    Sub 400 only

  • Spewing- saw this 4 hours too late it seems

    • If you add them to your bag you see the discount.
If Krad3r and Isho hadn't mentioned it I wouodbt have seen it.
Just checked and the discount still applies. Provided they have your size of course.

      • That’s the issue - lack of size

  • Thanks OP. Finally got one. Couldn’t get my size in previous deals.

  • Cheers OP, got my first pair..!

  • Thanks OP, got another pair :))

  • +11

Since people are going to see these and find they missed out and others are going to dump on RM's as too expensive not worth is etc, as a community service I'll just hammer out some alternatives here but keep in mind that RM's cost as much as they do for three reasons

    1. Where they are made- Australia
    2. How they are made- Goodyear welted, cork, steel shank
    3. What they are made of- Single piece of yearling leather, that means single pieces of flawless leather joined at the back only. Not easy to do.

No other boot will tick all three boxes, if you want something that will hit two of the three or something your choices are

Patfields: A clone of the comfort craftsman in G sizes, Made in India, decent soles, glued construction can be resoled.

Baxter Boots: The Goulburn is the closest to a pair of RM's, Goodyear Welted made in China.

Mandic: If you can find a pair of the Gilmore in your size left they are made in Australia and Goodyear Welted, the Gilmore Kangaroo is basically the same as the Patfields.

Mongrel: The 805's not build like a pair of RM's but are made in Australia and their dress boot but they are TPU outsole and are cemented or vulcanised. They have a shank in there, so try them on but they can be had for like $90 and they'll polish up just fine.

  • -3

The people that come out to specifically tell you they didn’t buy these for the RM tags…. Bought them for the RM tags

    • I hope you don’t make wild assumptions in real life lol

      • Fact, there are a dozen more comments you need to refute

        • +1

When you post your first deal I'm sure someone will be happy to grant your wish.

  • Shame no half size. RM store wouldn’t price match :(

    • I'm sure they almost laughed at you when you suggested the idea.

      • Was hoping to double dip with Amex credit! But iconic works out similar with cheap gift cards

    • Can't you just buy a full size with the price match, then go back and ask to change to a half size?

  • I just cant buy expensive shoes online because of my unusual feet

Where would i go for a fitting for these?

Well spotted. Hoped it helped her(?). She/he seems a tad confused. Upvoting rubbish comments by blaetc and boomramada and yet suggesting she/he wants to join the revered /s RMW "$500 club".

        • +1

Seemed like a redundant question. Pretty obvious you'd go to David Jones or RM Williams store (or outlet). Not sure what else can suggest. Even google it or go to the RM website , they'd have a size guide. What did people do before online shopping..

Personally wouldn't pay over 350$ for them, the price increases have been ridiculous (remember there were 3 in one year once, can't tell me that's inflation not price gouging).

          • -1

@G-rig: Australia is an expensive place to live and especially to make products. It's a cost of decent wages, conditions and protections, privatisation (of energy esp), outrageously inflated executive $alarieS, etc. Even the gas WE (the people) own was costing Australians (and businesses) more than the Japanese for example were paying after it was shipped to them. That may have changed, haven't bothered to check lately because it doesn't matter which major party has national govt. The LNP is wedded to multinational pillaging of Australian resources and private price gouging, and the ALP is too effing gutless/witless to do anything about it. They're completely shell-shocked by the MRRT debacle.

            • @Igaf: Yeah fair enough mate. That's all fair and true, just saying they have exceeded a reasonable price due to popularity as well. Like anything just have to wait for good deals!

            • @Igaf: Hopefully they will be more sustainable one day. Won't buy another pair.

  • Not cheap enough. It should be $450

    • $500 is the new $300 for these lol.

    • You can get that if you know someone on Origin Energy.

  • +1

Highly recommend trying on first to determine your size

  • My order is not being fulfilled, despite ordering early.

Thank you for your recent order xxxxx with David Jones.

We’re sorry to let you know that unfortunately, we are unable to fulfil this order. On the rare occasion an item at our Fulfilment Centre is damaged or missing we will only find out when we go to pick your order.

    • sorry bro. this shit happened to me too

  • I know I've missed the boat, but interested to know whether you'd choose black or chestnut for your first (and possibly only) pair? Why?

    • Taste is subjective but chestnut is probably more versatile, suited when you dress up or want to go casual. With some exceptions imo it looks dressier, and probably matches more colours.

    • Chestnut can't go wrong. Black for the second pair perhaps.

    • Chestnut or dark tan
