Custom ROM for Galaxy S3

I'm seriously thinking about putting a Custom ROM on my GS3.

Is there anyone that has any suggestions of what Rom to put on; would love a nice looking high featured rom but fast and customizable :)

Please let me know, and if anyone can take a Screenshot and upload the home; I'd appreciate it to :)

Also. Is it hard, Safe and what are the downfalls?

  • Whirlpool or xda would be a more informative to ask this.

  • I'd wait for another few months before thinking about this. I did it with my galaxy s, with a Tom that everyone said was quicksand stable, but the older my phone has gotten, the buggier it is now, random freezes and rebooted, gets very sluggish. and if you don't know what you are doing you run the risk of bricking your phone, and locking it up completely. android 4.1 is s brilliant OS, and you can download apps to customize most things. if you aren't overly technical, I'd think twice about using a custom Tom, nothing as good as the genuine thing, especially when its backed up by developers that test test test, before they offer a new release.

but, having said that, if u really want to do something like that, XDA developers is your best bet.

Are you running an iPhone these days? "Quicksand stable" - damn you auto-correct. :-P

I flash phones regularly and whenever i have some spare time (once a week at the least).

I have a Galaxy S1, S2, S3, GNex and an Asus Transformer (I'm an app developer with an addiction to droids!). The S3 was by far, the easiest of them all to root (access root directory and higher permissions), and I flashed Omega Rom (w/ Jellybean 4.1.1) within the first week of getting it. It's 99% faultless, as when using the stock keyboard, it can crash the messaging app - i use swype anyway. Apart from that, it's a brilliant ROM, and there are many, many alternatives to this as well.

I'll agree with Karlos in saying that, if you're not too interested in tinkering about, don't do it. Just wait around for the official Samsung releases. Let alone the warranty breaking. With that being said, whenever you'd like an update to your system, you'll need to seek out the latest updates/ROMs and flash these yourself, no official OTA, one-click business anymore.

Though, I'll disagree with what's been said about olders phones getting buggier - All of this depends on your ROM and the support of the ROM developers. My Galaxy S1 is now on AOKP JB Build 3, and it's running as smooth as my S2 is. Had JB been released before the S2, I would've just stuck with the S1.

Also, assuming you're considering doing this only to your S3, you have an extremely, extremely, mega-low chance of bricking your phone; Samsung Galaxy's are literally brick-proof. I can't say anything for HTC, Motorola, Sony, etc. though.

If needed, feel free to ask more! :)

  • Hey, noob question.

When I flash my rom do I can I redownload Navigon?

    • OMG, you just don't understand.

    • Hey,

If you choose to root your phone, then flash it later (not all at once), I'd highly suggest backing up App+Data for Navigon through something like Titanium Backup Free.

Flashing over a new ROM without backing it up will completely remove it from the system, despite still having all the data files (maps) still on your SD. Re-installing it at this point will most likely force it to re-download the entire lot again.

As before, better you run Titanium to backup App+data before flashing a new ROM. Restoring it to your new ROM will only take a couple of minutes.
