Suggest Me an Electricity Provider

Hey ozb family

Just bought a new house and setting up of new things is on
Wanted to get some info from fellow Ozb about retailers that are cheap/good (I understand it might depend on state and area) however any common probiders which are relatively less expensive than other

Also importantly any providers that take one off payments via the Coles prepaid MasterCard would be added advantage as I plan to prepay for 6 months once the cards are on sale

Thanks heaps

Just a heads up that Globird will bill you monthly even if you are on an old meter that is read quarterly… and the estimated use always happens to be higher than the actual for those months in between.

Each of the states will have their energy comparison websites. You can check them out - usually you can either enter the details from a previous bill to estimate your usage, or just go with some "standard / recommended" usage to get which providers are the cheapest.

From what I've found, it pays to change your plans every so often - I always find that my rates increase over time, and new deals are always popping up. Overall, they're all using the same infrastructure, so things like outages will be the same, it's just about the price. I've been with AGL, Origin, Globird, Momentum, Tango - all have been fine.

currently with Powershop for electricity. No complaints about them, their pricing is decent (they have powerpacks you can buy every now and then eg; "$50 worth of power for $30" - but they seem to be not as often as they used to be). Their customer service is good, pretty responsive. App is decent too

  • All the suppliers are fine IMO, never had an issue. Power tends to just work and the power retailers aren't going to solve any problems for you - just escalate it with the network (much like NBN).

It really pays to keep an eye on it. I locked in a low price before all the price hikes with energy australia, then moved house and switched to globird because I couldn't keep my previous low rates. I WFH so I generally use a lot more power during the day than most people and make use of a lot time of use, other people might be better off with a fixed rate (if that's an option) if they're only home in the evenings.

I'm looking at switching again coming into summer, because I basically consume no power at the moment during the day thanks to solar. I'll be going for the lowest daily rate and peak rate possible.

    Pick the cheapest
    Check every 6months
    Pick the cheapest again.

    • I'm interested in availing an electricity+gas plan for a property that I moving in. I am thinking of Energy Locals, Simply Energy, Globird, Dodo, or AGL. What parameters should I look into while checking the quote? Is it a good idea to look at monthly/quarterly prices?

  • Pick one that has premium 250 volt power. Your appliances will run more efficiently than on 240 volt.

  • Sorry for off topic but anyone in QLD can share experience when switching providers whenever the QLD gov credit got transfered? ie $550 for one year or 137.5 per quarter.
