Microsoft Xbox Consoles to Ban The Use of Some 3rd Party Game Controllers and Cheat Devices

https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/errors/error-code-0x82d6…

Microsoft has started to block the use of "unauthorised" game controllers, perhaps in a bid to stop some gamers from using cheat accessories and mouse-to-gamepad emulation hardware such as Cronus Zens, Xim adapters and Gamesirs VX2's. This will prevent gamers from using mouse + KB input methods on games that don't natively support such a function and having too much of a competitive advantage over thumbstick players.

Update: XIM adapters and similar devices are apparently not affected as noted by dexerto [XIM devices use a loophole where an OEM Xbox controller is used to authenticate the XIM device, meaning the Xbox only detects the authentic first-party device and doesn’t block the cheat device at all]. This ban as such might be a move to protect their revenue stream and not a move to ban cheaters, or it could be related to Microsoft's plans to expand its program for approved third-party wireless Xbox controllers.

Microsoft notes:

Microsoft and other licensed Xbox hardware partners' accessories that have been cosmetically modified to change their shape, such as moving input locations, are not impacted.

Note From the moment you connect an unauthorized accessory and receive error code 0x82d60002, you’ll have two weeks to use the accessory, after which time it will then be blocked from use with the console. At that time, you’ll receive error code 0x82d60003. We encourage you to contact the store or manufacturer where you obtained the accessory to get help with returning it.

If you've recently bought any game pads (e.g cheap generic ones imported from Aliexpress), input converters or fighting stick / hitbox that doesn't have a green coloured "Designed for Xbox" seal of approval, there's a strong likelihood that game controller will be blocked by your console (and you should probably return it, if you have no plans to use it on a PC).

    So lame

  • Not sure if they will be allowed to in EU

    • MS isn't obligated to support third-party peripherals… as far as the EU (or anyone) is concerned this is an error message, not a breach of consumer rights

      • MS isn't obligated to support third-party peripherals

Apple isn't obligated to support USB-C, but that didn't stop the EU from forcing them to…

        • iPhones barely supports USB-C (cough 480mbps cough), and MFi is a case-in-point of not supporting third party peripherals by Apple.

I don't LIKE the idea of locking out functioning devices either, but the EU isn't going to drop the hammer on such a negligibly small section of the whole market.

    Sounds great to me…

I'd be happier if they worked on killing off hackers all together.

  • Ok….

  • I am so happy with this. About time the Knm cheaters find out what they're actually made of.

  • Good! F the cheaters

  • Doesn't affect me because I use standard controller (and rarely play online) but,
how is using keyboard on console different from using keyboard on pc?
    .

    • Many games do not allow keyboard players to compete against controller gamers as it gives them too much of an advantage. Hence some of these no longer-supported devices have allowed people to compete unfairly.

Of course, there are other scenarios where the effect of the change is less clear and arguably monopolistic/profit-driven/etc.

  • I wish people would do even a little research before talking about things they have no bloody idea about, THIS WILL NOT AFFECT XIM OR ZEN USERS AT ALL.

This will only stop third party controllers that are not authorised, Xim and zen are not third party controllers and as they use genuine Xbox controller for authorisation it will have absolutely zero effect on them.
