This is a bigger Google mini, right?

    • Yes

  • Will two of these be equivalent to one google home max in terms of sound?

    • +2

Or are 3 nest minis equivalent of one of these.

Benefits of multispeaker setups mean you can pair two for stereo sound.

But on a mesh wifi setup Google speaker groups are extremely flakey and often drop speakers and groups

    • +2

      No

      • not designed to have 2 to get spatial stereo.

    • +1

No, the Max is on a completely different level, especially if you combine 2 of them in stereo mode. Then play music from Apple Music’s lossless spatial audio catalogue, and you have one of the best sounding stereos I’ve heard.

      • How do you play Apple music on Google speakers?

        • You cast it

          • @abs898: From an Android device yes. Can you natively chrome-cast Apple Music from an iOS device to Google speakers?

        • You just ask your google speakers to allow bluetooth pairing mode.

          • @ForkSnorter: That works but defeats the benefits of the mentioned lossless format, no?

Also, can you Bluetooth to two Google speakers simultaneously for stereo?

            • @MerlinKlendatu:

That works but defeats the benefits of the mentioned lossless format, no?

You're right, I hadn't considered this. Still sounds amazing though. Combination of good speakers, very noticeable 3-dimensional stereo sound, and the spatial audio.

Also, can you Bluetooth to two Google speakers simultaneously for stereo?

Yes. The 2 Google speakers are permanently linked to each other when in stereo mode and considered 1 speaker group. I'm not sure if your phone Bluetooths to both speakers, or whether it just connects to 1 speaker (the one in charge of the speaker group) which passes the data to the 2nd one.

From reviews, seems like it's the best sounding of the Nest range but a good set of 2.1 computer speakers will still blow it out of the water. Even though the bass is better than most Nests - a standalone subwoofer comfortably beats it. Why Google stubbornly refuses to add a 3.5mm audio-out like Amazon did and why Amazon has now removed that audio-out is beyond me. If you're reading, all these speakers sound crap, big tech!

That said, would be good hear from those who actually own this device.

They sound a shitload better than the home mini but nowhere near as good as the home max. No idea why they discontinued the home max.

But yeah for $99 a set of 2.0 speakers would sound better. But less convenient and bulkier/uglier

      • My Home Max is the worst performer in the house with regards to connection and drop outs. Sound is good when it's decided to stay connected though.

        • +1

I’ve never had a drop out on mine (that I can remember) over the there years I’ve owned it. I’ve got reliable wifi though

        • Same my home max is the work performer too especially when it comes to processing instructions. I have to repeat things quite a few times. Often my minis from the other rooms pick up the instructions much faster and play in the rooms to my anger

        • I have a regular home, a heap of minis and a nest audio, I find the nest audio to be the worst performer in terms of response.

Did you know you can pair google speakers to another speaker via Bluetooth? I use a mini to drive a bigger set of better quality speakers, no 3.5mm required

      • +1

But the Bluetooth audio quality in these is garbage.

    • +2

Yeah I had one of these for ages and replaced it with Edifier R1700BTs which aren't smart but sound so much better.

      • +1

same here, and with a google Audio cast

    • I have logitech 2.1 speakers with sub-woofer and although the google isn't as good as 2.1 speakers due to spatial and stereo sync BUT google is great as a radio that supports voice control …. use the google more than my 2.1 speakers most of the time. I'd get another nest audio for other room if I see a good deal on chalk colour …..

    • Are you sure you don't have the mini or older version of the home? Edit: (or did you get them secondhand as a pair for $90?)

      • +2

I got one for $50 and one for $40, both brand new
I waited a while for the second one to pop up.
Both were purchased over a year ago.

I just had a look on marketplace now and everyone is asking $90-100

    • Got mine as a freebie with my Pixel 6 or Pixel 7.

  • Can you pair a Google nest home max with one of these in stereo mode?

    • No

      • Thats a bugger, a bit like how you cant pair a gen 1 mini with a gen 2. Although I guess if they are different output levels it may sound a bit weird. Can still have them connected in the same group in mono though I guess.

        • It's a patent issue with Sonos. Look it up

          • @Daddy Chill: Can pair two like devices though. Weird if it’s a patent issue.

  • +6

wow I didn't know Kmart sold stuff over 10 bucks :D good price though.

  • I bought them for 199 from Harvey Norman now they are 99

  • had this free from pixel 6 pro - actually decent sound

  • Thanks OP! Just FYI delivery is free for items above $65 so no delivery cost at all

  • Anyone else worried about them phasing all of these devices out when they bring out 'Google Assistant with Bard?', great excuse to get you to buy new devices… I have $300 Google Store credit about to expire, I don't want anything so considering getting the Nest Hub Max but worried it will be redundant in a year's time.

  • These are properly excellent at this price, doubly so if you're in the Google Eco system and hey googling everything anyway

    149 you can do better.

  • Still available at this price in store
