Recommendations for Supermarket Gravy

Looks like a local shop that made delicious gravy of closing up so now I'm gonna have to rely on supermarket gravy.

I am the world's worst cook and after giving myself food poisoning the other day and proving my culinary skills I'm set on just getting premade gravy.

So which ones do you recommend or don't recommend to get and try.

It's just going to be something to go with mashed potatoes and chips so standard chips gravy.

I have tried some from Coles and so far they have all been bad. So wondering if there is any good ones at all or maybe I'm just going to have to get some from KFC and bring it home.

Fwiw the KFC gravy so far has been better than what I could find at Coles or woollies.

If ya want a great gravy, According to Paul Kelly just add flour, salt, a little red wine and don't forget a dollop of tomato sauce for sweetness and that extra tang.

  • all aboard the gravytrain

Just make it at home. I don't care how incompetent your culinary skills are, if you can't make a basic recipe like this you also probably shouldn't be let near a microwave to reheat a packet.

  • I am the world's worst cook and after giving myself food poisoning <——?

if you use fresh clean food and cook it properly there is zero chance to get food poisoning.

What did you cook, what was the cause of the issue?

eg. buy meat as close to the time you wish to cook, buy fresh vegies the same day or the day before. it really is not hard.

Gravy is very easy, let assume steak, after cooking the steak, chuck in the gravy mix, into the leftover steak fat etc in the pan (if not burnt) then some hot boiling water amount depending on packet and thickness desired, best to start with half the recommended water then slowly add more to thin it out, add some spices if you want a particular taste, and then allow it to start to boil for a minute or two and to thicken if desired

Maggi gravy is the go to. Can be obtained from Costco or Amazon. https://www.amazon.com.au/Nestle-Maggi-Classic-Rich-Gravy/dp….

so i take it nobody knows or there is no good store bought gravy huh

fair nuff that stuff is hard to come by

    thanks all

    • Just buy any gravy powder, gravox or generic colesworth/aldi brand, follow the instructions, but also add in any pan juices of whatever meat you are cooking, especially the dark/stuck/burnt stuff on the pan. Even if you buy a supermarket bbq chicken, use the juices in the bottom of the bag. Tastes good. Its the cooking juices that give the good flavour.

      • thanks yeah i knew this recipe but i am not a good cook atm hard to explain but basically my only chance is if the shop that is closing decides to come back

  • it's all good mates thanks for the gravy suggestions looks like kfc is still my best bet all good cheers thanks for the replies all

  • Are there no charcoal chicken shops around you?

    • Nope.

The last one that did has closed up

  • In my opinion, Bisto gravy is the only decent one you can get at the supermarkets. Pretty expensive though, but goes on special often enough.

    • I have heard about bisto.. any special extra touches to make the flavour really pop or just follow instructions and it should be good.
