Bunnings - Lack of Clearance Products

Has anyone else's local bunnings dropped off with the amount of clearance deals they have?

In the past, every so often you used to be able to find some decent deals particular in the gardening section with plants that might not be looking too great.

I feel like they rather just let the plants die and throw stuff in the bin instead of giving their customers a good deal every now and then…

  • Never find their clearances particularly good. I got some tomato and chilli plants the other day for $1 each on clearance though. Sometimes there's a good clearance post on OzBargain, but otherwise I generally avoid Bunnings as most of what they sell is low quality rubbish and not that cheap.

    • Not alway's , sometime and sometimes Only (aka quite rarely you get very good deals at bunnings). But dont expect them to pop up as much as e.g. your local grocerry giant does clearance markdowns near closing time.

I go to three Bunnings stores near me, and I don't think i've ever found something that I would consider good value.

  • Guess it depends on the store as my local still regularly has the usual rotating shelves of clearance stock in their usual locations.

Though the last few times, I haven't seen as many of the clearance plants as I used to. Used to enjoy getting them as I still have a few 50c strawberry and raspberry plants going strong. Could just chalk it up to the time of year / season.

My local has clearance stuff put out 7am Saturday and Sundays mainly. Gotta love the bunch of older (usually dads) who basically will knock over every other punter on doors open, and bolt down to the tool section for the newest clearance goods.

Well, it's not like there's an alternative, Master's showed everyone that Bunnings is running a pretty lean operation.

My Masters bought washing machine still going strong since 2016.

we've been told we have to slow down on mark downs

    • How does HO tell the stores? Through KPIs?

      • +3

yeah thru weekly reports, anything with a high dollar mark down, we get a please explain.. as for tackling greenlife clearance items, we have also reduced our ordering to try and reduce wastage, wayy to much was going in the bin.

Tell your boss that's why we now order from Amazon instead…

@jv: end of the day, i still get paid

          • @jv: rude !!, he is not working here, you should forward your enquiry directly to bunnings " [email protected] " instead of saying that to him to forward to someone else.

as in plants or the brand?

        • one wonders about Bunnings supply chain for said live plants/gardening?
I do work in supply chain - but NOT direct to any Bunnings store.

And plants going 2+ days with NO water at all … surely would be causing some stress on the plant ???
Esp … coming into summer and 35+ degree days.

I guess - from that - best to buy plants from bunnings store close to major towns … not regional areas.
If live in regional area … perhaps best going to local nursery/etc.

That explains a lot. I found the lights section always had a couple of clearance tables with excellent bargains. Now they're nowhere to be seen.

  • Found an esky branded esky on clearance for bout half price, was not bad by 2023 standards and so much better quality than the spinifex one on extreme discount from a completely ridiculous RRP I got from Anaconda (yes that one with the crimp-hold instead of handles).

  • My local Bunnings had mark down stickers on all Dewalt power tools the other day. But it was like 1 or 2 dollars off RRP for every item!? WTF is the point of that?

That's what my local Coles does… Marks down fresh meat/cheese by 10 cents…

      • Which Coles is your local?

        • +3

          Coles Moe.

@jv: Can't wait to see you at the OzBargain meet up.

      • Coles are honestly a disgrace. Their dumpsters must be overflowing with perfectly edible food. Woolworths are putting them to shame. Every day stuff is going out the door at 80-90% off at my local. Just picked up 1kg of ricotta cheese for $2.20 today, and making canneloni for dinner with it. With the leftover i'll make an Italian lemon ricotta cake. Saving a lot of money by shopping these markdowns and getting some great stuff..

I think it’s store specific. My Coles used to do really good ones, now less often but it still happens. Woolworths it’s less common. Based on Markdown addicts on facebook there’s still some coles doing big markdowns.

    • They may have similar margins to a well known Tech company.

      • … who as retail geniuses never ever discount at their company outlets. Bunnings and JB have both been doing the same thing. Don’t mark down in-store, dump via an alternative channel.

  • I find its cyclical. Most of the best markdowns happen just after stocktake, which varies from store to store but is usually may-july

Wish Masters were still around to give Bunnings some real competition.
