Optus Ending $0/M Data Sharing SIM

Received below email from Optus today, stating they will end $0/m data sharing SIM from early December.

Thank you for being with Optus over the years. Since you joined us, we’ve continued to update and improve our products, particularly as our customers’ needs and technology continue to evolve.
This means we’ll be saying goodbye to our old shared data plans and moving your service(s) to a new plan. Your current shared data plan(s) has no ongoing cost or data inclusion.
Your new plan will cost $5 per month and will now include 5GB of data per service, which will be added to the data sharing pool used by all eligible services that share data on your account.
What does this mean for you?
From about 8th December 2023, we’ll be moving your shared data service(s) to our new 5GB Shared Data plan, with more detail about your new plan in the Critical Information Summary (CIS). The first month of your plan will be free, so you will not be charged the new plan price until your second bill after the change takes effect.

Really doesn't seem the time for Optus to give whatever remaining customers they have a reason to leave. It's only $5 but they seriously need to read the room.

    • I wish Telstra gave data/sim sharing to Apple Watch for free. Their plans aren't cheap. But why give something for free when people will pay.

Optus has progressively gotten more and more s—t

from getting rid of free optus sports on people who are on contracts

to upping the prices of all their plans

not to mention the data breech disaster

i used to think Optus was a worthy competitor to telstra slightly 'worse' service but far more value for money - however the last 2 years they have just become s—t there is no other way to describe their service

Thank you for being a loyal customer. Here's a complimentary kick in the balls.

  • Funny been trying too cancel my Optus data plan with them as a credit they offered me few years back has run out which was paying my data plan with them

1st attempt to cancel they offered me 2 months free to try out a new choice data plan usually costing $20 per month with 20gb data, 2nd attempt too cancel (before 2 months free was up) now theyve offered 3x months free for this choice 20gb data plan

Im wondering how long this will go on for lolz

People here still use Optus and Telstra ? 😲

    • I gather you use Vodafone?

      • Nah, Boost.

        • +1

So you do indeed use Telstra

          • @Guybrush57: Nah, Boost.

            • +1

@jv: Funny how your Boost SIM can't send/receive calls or texts whenever the Telstra network is down.

    • Yupz,.. especially when they offer unbelievable deals, like plans next too nothing 👉😃👈

      • ""like plans next too nothing ""
        "" offer unbelievable deals""

        Please explain

        • Italkdigital lives in a parallel universe.
          He's only visiting.

          • @jv: Yupz one needs too be in a parallel universe for one too get an extraordinary deal or youll be left behind

        • Read above latest with Optus I got 5 months free data plan and numerous past deals with Optus, Telstra well jbhi/telstra plans have managed deals i think 2x 300gb calls/sms plans, i think tad under $50 for both just had to mess around with selling a new Samsung s23 mobile that came with the deal, there are lots of ways of manipulating a deal too ones advantage anyway im sure most true Ozbargainers would have seen these past deals

Have not received any notification yet. If true, it will be time to quit. I have 6 of them.

Same…. The only reason I haven't left Optus was because of the free data sims I have attached to my account. Not that I use them much, but I know once they are gone I'll never get them back again!

      • Exactly.

        • +1

What are you guys looking to move to? I got my email this morning.

  • +2

I mean, they stopped giving it to new customers back in 2015 or so….. I am surprised it didn't end earlier for existing customers.

I remember signing up so many customers on it, crazy how many people are on. When it first released, I would sign up easily 10+ people per shift then when it ended for new sign ups, the amount of back lash I got. I remember I even got spat on because I couldn't offer it because I literally couldn't select it in our system.

    • +2

A customer spat on you? Disgusting behaviour.

      • +1

Yup because I couldn't give him what he wanted which was this offer.

So many customers wanted it but it was quickly discontinued because Optus was losing so much money.

We even had a customer that lit a tissue box on fire and threw it in the store and yelled "I hate Optus". He ran and police and security didn't come in time to catch him.

The spike that holds receipts, we got a store wide email to get rid of them instantly because a customer grabbed it and threatened to stab an employee with it cause they were angry for whatever reason.

        • Wow. I have been disappointed to learn I have missed a deal but I have never spat on an employee or threatened to stab them.

          • @Guybrush57: Yeah, people are effing crazy when something doesn't go their way.

    • Yeah, I was really suprised to see this post now, as I was already hit with this for the data sim in my tablet around that time.

It was free when I signed up, but the sim never worked in my Nexus 9 anyway. No ammount of troubleshooting with Optus or on my own solved the problem, so I assumed it wasn't an approved device on their network or something.
It worked fine with a Telstra sim, but I wasn't willing to switch to Telstra over it at the time.

Since it was free, I just left it in there and lived with wifi only, waiting for a fix. Months later they tried to make me start paying $5 a month, so I cancelled and moved on with my life.

  • Just checked and I too got the optus email. :(

I did mind but accepted them changing my $25 / month with 50gb plan to $39 / month at 100gb only because I could data share and have an extra sim for my mother to use as her dedicated home internet.

Will now be looking elsewhere like other have said - no need to atay if I can't give my data away.

  • Optus Ending $0/M Data Sharing SIM. hmm

so they were sharing data for $0, and now they gonna pay is for data sharing ??? Cool !! they better start paying their old users first.

I wonder if i can go and sign up anotherbsata share sim for $5. I know in the past i couldnt.

    • Got my email this morning too, looking at options and Belong data plan is the best I found for now.

    • Hey 2nite, did you find anything out about this? Clicking around my optus account I am getting the feeling I can add another one of these.

I have been a very loyal customer to Optus, including when they lost (yes, lost!) my primary mobile number and ended up giving it to some pumpkin farmer on the NSW North Coast, in the form of a data only SIM, when they were attempting to order an Apple Watch. Apparently the phone sales operator had kept the same screen, with the same mobile number open between submitting my port in order and generating a work order for the Apple Watch customer. I eventually was able to get my mobile number back, but this was only thanks to a very cluey and helpful Optus Shop employee at one of their larger stores in Sydney's West, who was able to put two and two together (nothing quite like the Optus Chat and Call Centre telling you "you don't own this number and never have").

Anyway, these data share sims are part of why I kept some of my mobile services with Optus. However, with my home internet going up by $5/month, my mobile service going up by $4/month with a reduction by 10GB in my per month data allocation, and not $25 of extra charges a month; none of which Optus have bothered notifying me about, it's time to say "No Optus" and port to another carrier who seemingly want my business.

    • I left a few days ago and haven't looked back after 15 years with them. I have used Amaysim for a bit and found that Optus network is pretty decent now that everyone has left.

I stayed with Optus for a loooong time just because I had two of these $0 data sims. They made all my price comparisons fall over.

That all said, $5/month for a data sim is still better than anything else I can find, although I can probably get a cheaper family plan than the optus one.

Question: is this $5/month sim still effectively just a legacy thing? Or can I now add a couple more sim cards for $5/month each? Anyone know?

EDIT: clicking around a bit more, I found this document: https://www.optus.com.au/content/dam/optus/documents/about-us/legal/wcpricing(consumersmb)s1.doc

… and item 7 is the $5 shared data plan. Plan ID is 36801544. It kind of reads like this plan is only available as a replacement for the $0 plan.

Spoke with Optus about adding another $5 data sim.

You cannot get any additional $5 sims so there isn't even that upside to this change. After pushing them and wasting time the best I got was an offer of a $5 sim for 12 months, reverting to $20 thereafter.

17 years with Optus and currently on a family plan plus two data sims, so $175/month (from $149 eighteen months ago). Time to dig around properly, much as I hate the hassle of changing these things.
