Can You Return Alcohol at Costco?

Has anyone done it? I can't see anything on the website specifically mentioning alcohol returns

Costco's Return Policy for Change of Mind doesn't mention Alcohol in their exceptions, so you should be able to (assuming it hasn't been opened, etc).

Best to call them up or visit their customer service desk to confirm.

  • Can You Return Alcohol at Costco?

Why? What is the reason for returning it?

Has it been opened? If so, How much is left?

While JV says you can't, Costco is generally pretty good with returns and the Australian website doesn't say you can't return booze. So it will 'depend' on why you are returning the product. At the end of the day, the worst they will say is no.

Maybe you can gift it instead?

Why? What is the reason for returning it?

Bought some grog and kept the receipt.

      Drank it all that night.

Very p*ssed and went dumpster diving.

Won the lottery and found some dumped alcohol that matches the receipt description…

Bought it online because it was cheaper than in store. It was leaking on arrival. It's OOS online now so can't repurchase, but they won't let me exchange in store or honour the online price. So I'm wondering if I can purchase at the higher price in store and then return the faulty ones instead…

      • If the lid and its safety features/collar are still intact then I would certainly think it's worth going instore and seeing if it's possible for an exchange or refund/repurchase if its clearly a fault or an issue caused during delivery.

So what you're saying is they will refund you, but you don't want to do that as you're now missing out on a deal that isn't around anymore.

Its going to be a hard sell to say you didn't notice the bottle 'leaking' when you purchased it instore for a refund, they might only offer a exchange.

Take the refund, buy something else.

        • In my experience with a faulty product they wouldn't exchange, I had to get a refund and then repurchase and without the discount the original transaction had. I was a bit miffed so waited to replace the item once on special again. This was a couple of years ago now so maybe things have changed but I wouldn't count on it.

Which is what the OP has been offered by the online team but doesn't want to do.

They want to instead now go buy instore a good product, and then return a 'leaking' one in its place. It will depend on how bad its leaking and why.

If the bottle is damaged enough causing it to leak etc as claimed, costco could rightly so claim the OP damaged it since leaving the store and not offer a refund.

            • @JimmyF: Indeed. They might have luck if the lid's metal collar isn't broken/mostly intact. Excise liabilities come into play from the retailer/warehouse so that seal must be intact when sent for destruction and remission of excise etc. (That's how it used to work back in the day anyway.)

              • +1

@Idjit: It will depend on how the bottle is leaking which the OP hasn't shared. But if it's leaking from the lid and the seals are intact along with the rest of the bottle they might be ok if the bottle doesn't look damaged at all.

If it was one of the plastic booze bottles that has a crack in it from rough transport then yeah nah.

Whatever the reason for leaking it appears to be from rough transport. So in my books it is very easy for Costco to claim the OP did this damage after they left the store if they go the instore purchase route.

                • @JimmyF: Fair call…

                  • +1

@Idjit: It's hard to say without seeing the bottle/damage, OP said it was damaged in transit, which will also look like the OP walked out to the car and dropped the bottle so now wants a refund.

                    • @JimmyF: This is very much the case - without a pic all we can do is speculate. OP just needs to clear it up instore and move on with the outcome.

                • @JimmyF: The bottle doesn't look visibly damaged but it was transported on its side and leaked into the bubble wrap. I don't know if there was something defective with the caps or maybe temperature changes during shipping but both bottles leaked. Online said it's at the warehouse's discretion to accept an exchange in store but the warehouse won't.

Ok, you won't get a refund if you purchase a new one and then try to return your 'bubble wrapped' one in store, as this isn't how they sell the bottles instore.

Online said it's at the warehouse's discretion to accept an exchange in store but the warehouse won't.

Can't see why the store would want to exchange a product they didn't sell. So I'm guessing their 'discretion' would be no.

Honestly how much has leaked out? While its not the best, it might better to live with 10ml less in each bottle due to the sale price.

take the refund and stop complaining.

you win some, you lose some

        jeeze

You must be new to Costco, they don't do exchange, they only refund on what you pay for.

the Australian website doesn't say you can't return booze.

Drinks that have been chilled then allowed to return to room temperature are often compromised in quality and not re-saleable.

LOL I'll take things that are also not on the australian website.

      • In terms of temp changes with drinks +++ affecting quality …
This is more to do with Wine.

Pretty much ALL spirits handle temp changes very well …. heck. Vodka even keeps in a freezer.

As to beer … again - this doesn't affect quality (much lesser degree).
Esp since beer goes through different temp changes (chilled VS non-chilled) … during it's journey of being transported to the bottle shop/store … BEFORE it even gets into the hands of the end consumer.

        • As to beer … again - this doesn't affect quality

          Yes it does.

Leave some beer in the sun all day, then drink it a few days later…

In the gutter outside early the following morning ? :) :)

    • On a serious note if you are organizing an event and want to get grog on consignment, where the unsold is returned , you may be able to negotiate with a pub or wholesaler in advance. I have done that in the past.

  • Why?

  • I reckon they would take it back opennes if you said it was terrible tasting.

    • +6

Not sure about that, bought a bottle of Vodka from there once, drank it all one night and not long after became violently ill, felt like trash for the next day, so there was clearly something wrong with it, tried to take it back but they said no.

  • What did they say when you called them?

  • Technically under Australian Consumer Law - if it's not fit for purpose you can.

From the OP's other posts, they have offered a refund. OP doesn't want that as it is no longer on sale.

Costco doesn't do 'exchanges'. It only does refunds even instore. For an exchange, you basically get a refund and go buy it again. The customer service/refund area isn't geared for exchanges. It is really no different to a lot of stores,

    • +2

Just as JimmyF said, they don't do exchanges. OP's issue is that he wants it back at a discounted price.
OP can either get the refund and wait till the next round of discounts or tough t!tt!es.
