For a while I was buying yearly subscriptions on eBay for $15. They are from overseas where IT people are selling off companies extra licenses. Eventually did as others have recommended and just use windows defender.

I have previously emailed saying I was unhappy with the renewal price and was offered a 50% discount which was still too expensive for me. I have sinced moved to Kasperksy as it is much cheaper ($17/y), lighter on my system that Bitdefender or Windows Defender and doesn't block me from playing Civ VI in Local Network mode cause I don't want to deal with the Windows built-in firewall. You can get really cheap licenses from SaveOnIt.
Kaspersky is a Russian company, so governments have for a number of years been warning against its use, and outright banning (even more so since Ukraine war) its use on their networks.
Outside of it's origin in Russia, it's a great product and it does what it says on the tin effectively. You could make the same agrument against any AV or software claiming it is NSA spyware, for example.
As always users should consider available info and make up their own minds.
Windows Defender is all you need unless you like the other features BitDefender has. If all you are after is an AV/AM, then Defender will tick your boxes and you don't have to pay for it.

You don’t need it. Get MalwareBytes instead and inbuilt Defender updated.
