[NSW] Dog Registration and Relevant Desexing Age

Emailed council for clarification but no responses yet, thought no harm asking here since other people would have gone through the same process.

According to this page: https://www.olg.nsw.gov.au/public/dogs-cats/nsw-pet-registry…

Life time registration for a desexed dog (done by relevant age) costs $75, not desexed (or done after relevant age) costs $252.

What is relevant age? 6 months?

Does that mean you will get a refund if registered at full cost, then desexed before 6 months old?

So it's better to desex the dog early, the extra $177 can be used towards the surgery.

  • What is relevant age? 6 months?

    usually.

  • -1

So it's better to desex the dog early

    no.

    • Yeah, I was wondering, vet actually suggested wait unit 12 months.

Policy makers just want to get it done without considering health risks.

Most likely will wait, $177 is good money, but one time cost over 10+ years.

  • Does that mean you will get a refund if registered at full cost, then desexed before 6 months old

If you follow the refund process and the dog was desexed at the time full payment was made.

    • But why would you pay in full then ask for a refund if the dog is already desexed when you register it.

I guess it’s possible the owner didn’t know then found out later, but considering it has to be done at such a young age to qualify, for a non trivial surgery that costs $500+ and weeks to fully recover, how can the owner not know or someone hasn’t mentioned it earlier?

But reading the refund process, it does say done before full payment.

  • In NSW you need to register your dog by 6 months of age. If the vet recommends leaving it till 12 months you can get them to do a written notification online that allows you to still get the cheaper cost.
See Dog - not desexed (not recommended) and under faqs What if I have a medical exemption for desexing my pet?

    • Thanks, I didn't think along those lines, but makes sense, will speak to the vet again.

  • Turns out it's really simple online if the dog has already been microchipped - which is consider registered, but fee unpaid.

Pet owner can create an account in the pet registry and link the dog by microchip number, and then pay online.

If a vet has noted desex is not recommended until a future date, then it automatically shows reduced fee.

    No forms or letters needed.

Obviously once desexed, a vet will update the record to indicate as such. So it will be easy to audit when desex is overdue and to request for additional fees, not sure if they do, but certainly they can.

  • Digging up a dead thread.

We got a dog from a registered breeder due to hypo allergenic family

Almost 6 months old now and just got desexed.
Went to register her with nsw pet registry and no match. Called up and they said the chip that is in the dog isn't showing up in their system. Breeder stuffed up by not filling out an M1 form. Pet registry said either the breeder can fill out an M1 or the vet can fill out a form to correct the issue.
Breeder agreed and said give me a few days. Not ideal considering she's 6 months in about 2 weeks.
Vet who we used for the desexing said they haven't scanned her before and she's not on their system so can't do it without a vet consult. I thought that's odd to desex a dog and not have it scanned and verified you're putting the desex document on the right dog.
So it's looking like we aren't going to get her registered by 6 months. My question is, is it desexed by 6 months registered whenever for the $75 fee or desexed and register by 6 months for $75
If it's desexed and registered by 6 months should I be pushing the vet calling BS on not scanning for the desex as the breeder is not likely to get the papers to me and through council in time plus then the registration documents.
