Leaving Bad Reviews for Businesses Who Do Not Reply to Quotes?

Long time since my last post. I’m still alive, prostate issues just fine atm.

Would you ever consider leaving a bad review for businesses that are rated 5 stars for poor customer service even after follow ups on quotes?

In the last few weeks I’ve tried contacting many companies who pride themselves on “Great Customer Service” and “5 star reviews”….

These companies have not returned my web form submissions and even upon calling the businesses directly the numbers will go to msg bank or to a reception who will promise someone to have my call returned (Never happens)

Nothing comes back my way….
Now I wouldn’t care if these businesses were no frills, and on the cheaper end but these companies plaster their entire website with how good their customer service is.
Am I the asshole for considering leaving a bad review?

I leave a bad review if someone has done bad work. Right now there are staff shortages everywhere so I wouldn't take it too personally and would just move on to the next place. Most likely you're going to find it difficult to find anyone to do a simple job at the moment.

Yeah that’s why I thought I’d put this question out there. Usually reviews are for the work, I just hate how their website is smashing the customer service aspect.

    no

They'll just delete them so don't stress your prostate on them.

If they are as crap as you say they are they will fall on their own sword anyway. You have bigger fish to fry my friend.

I probably will get smashed for even considering it but I understand companies are short handed, etc but maybe a side note on the website stating they will get back to you within a certain amount of timeframe is at least a better solution.

I'd take it as a positive. If thats how they respond when your trying to give them money, imagine how they would respond if you had an issue. They should get a positive review for being transparent on how unhelpful they are.

I've been thinking the same thing - but decided I really can't be bothered haha

  • I work with small businesses and bad reviews really bother them, especially if it's unjustified. Most businesses are kinda messy behind the scenes so just because they have a slick website doesn't mean they have hired the people to manage it all. Their forms may get hundreds of unpromising leads a week.

Stick to the truth. Don't embellish. Just put the facts down that you can prove. Don't lie or make it sound worse than it is, just stink to the factual points. Don't rant, just make it factual and succinct.

Source: I am a top 10% rated user on Google reviews… I review A LOT (too much, but I get bored in waiting rooms and restaurants), and sticking to this, I have NEVER had a review rejected or taken down. I have been threatened with legal action, but I just say "go ahead, I have proof here of what I have said and will mount this as my defence in court" and that is as far as that any have ever gone.

  • I've had businesses not quote. Recently blinds delivery and installation, gardening work.

If a business doesn't want the job, It seems normal for them not to quote.

For the above 2 for instance, the window was an unusual shape, nobody wanted to do it. For gardening work they are all after straight easy mowing jobs, nothing more, my work was a bit more involved.

Certainly not deserving of a bad review.

Technically you're not a customer who has received a service from their core business yet. I don't think it's appropriate.

This is where the review system is tricky. Do I technically have to be a customer to review a service?

What about if you go to a cafe and order breakfast and it never comes so you walk out?

You never received a server from their core business either but you would still be justified leaving a bad review. Whether or not you think not replying to quotes is worth a bad review is another conversation.

I have tried to contact builders to install a window AC unit. Only to contact 50 or so companies by various ways only to get nothing in return. My first thought wasn't I'm going to leave negative reviews.

Builders are in short supply and no point going you wont install my air con/carport you suck 1 star! If they replied and said on it will be $800 for the AC unit or $4000 for the carport ok that is fine. Ok I can start Friday. Then ghosts me/you then yes warranted.

Currently you will get an auto ghost if it's too vague/your my budget is only X way under market value or what they will quote is more then a "normal person" would pay. So no point in wasting their time going any further.

I bet if I contacted the same companies again and said yes I don't mind if it costs $800 to install I would get everyone replying. Which I am very tempted to do.

Yet I have a feeling if I leave a bad review, they will be in touch quick smart to rectify that right? That’s where the problem also sits.

  • I would consider it but ONLY by being honest in the review - describing how they never gave me a quote or a response

Great Customer Service” and “5 star reviews"

lol every business ever will have those generic words

  • I don't think that's fair for an initial point of contact, it's a sign they're massively busy.

If you're getting frustrated at chasing people you could try somewhere like Hipages. I've put up a couple of jobs on there that I was struggling to get anyone interested in and had good responses from people keen for the work.

  • What do you hope to achieve? Would you want someone you’ve just given one star review to doing your work? You’ve just removed one more builder from your selection pool. It would be better if they sent a “sorry too busy email” but tradies don’t necessarily work that way. They don’t want the hassle.

Have you tried putting a quote request up on the Master Builders websites. That is how I’ve got work done in the past.

  • If you feel you must. It may help others decide about their business or ultimately help them to lift their game. I can imagine web forms get spammed a lot. It is unprofessional to not follow through after a phone call.

BUT… stick to facts. No need for insults etc. keep it ‘professional’. Eg Business failed to respond to web enquiries. Were professional when I contacted them by phone but still failed to provide a quotation after xxx days.

Hopefully if a business sees something like that they’ll change their response time for a web form (or delete it) and follow through properly with phone contact.

Personally I’ve not had a lot of luck from small businesses via web forms so have given up. Larger businesses seem to have more staff for that stuff. Smaller businesses probably don’t have well developed quote tracking systems.

  • If a business doesnt get back to me i go elsewhere. Don't waste your time with bad reviews.

  • I think it’s very appropriate to leave a review, irrespective if you’re a customer or not. It just boils down to whether you can be bothered or not. I don’t care if they’re undermanned, or too busy. If they talk the talk, then they should walk the walk.

You’re also providing a service so others get an idea or whom they’re dealing with and what they are like. As someone else mentioned, just state the facts.

Crap customer service needs to be called out.

  • I wouldn't, but places are busy, and have no staff, I wanted some electrical work done, asked for quotes from a couple of electricians, one got back to me in about 4 days, another took almost 2 weeks, then I had to wait a few days from each one to receive a quote. Idk why I bothered asking multiple when it basically the same price from both (less than $50 difference).
