Only rail pass got nerfed, individual tickets (eg what's in this deal) haven't changed at this point.

Rail pass now makes almost no sense unless you want to spend a week sitting in trains.

      • I dunno I used it heaps during my visit this year even though I was mostly riding.

But yeah the October increases pretty much killed it for anyone doing less than 6 trips in a week.

It is nice also having free metro travel for JR lines but it gets a little complicated to figure out

Disagree. Here's a good way to use a 7-day JR Pass for a 2-week holiday, for someone new to Japan. I find it best to travel with via Shinkansen with your luggage in the evening, so when you arrive at your destination you can immediately check into the hotel. Traveling in the morning eats into your daytime hours too much, and the hotels usually won't let you check in before 3pm anyway. Here's how you do it, if you're flying into and out of Tokyo:

        • Fly into Tokyo and spend your first week there. Get used to using public transport, buying food, using ATMs. Swap your exchange vouchers for JR passes, stating that you want the JR Pass to become valid on your last day in Tokyo.
        • On the last day in Tokyo, check out early, and catch the Shinkansen to Osaka. This is an exception to my evening travel rule, as the JR Pass is valid for whole days. Waiting until evening will waste a day of your JR pass.
        • When you arrive in Osaka, take your bags to the hotel, and ask them to mind your bags until you can check in later that day. They'll want to check your booking, and the storage is usually free.
        • Spend 2.5 days/3 nights in Osaka.
        • While staying in Osaka, consider a day trip to Himeji Castle, the largest and most-visited castle in Japan. 30 minutes each way on the Shinkansen, plus a bus ride between Himeji station and the Castle.
        • On your last day in Osaka, check out and ask the hotel to store your bags until that evening.
        • Take a day trip to Hiroshima via the Shinkansen (about 1.5 hours each way), returning in the evening, collecting your bags, and then catch another Shinkansen to your Kyoto hotel.
        • Spend 2 full days in Kyoto/ 3 nights.
        • On the next day, your JR pass will run out at midnight, so travel back to to Tokyo. If you're departing via Narita, you can also use the JR Pass to travel for free on the NEX high-speed train between Tokyo and Narita, but you MUST book your seats beforehand.

        Notes:

        • While in Hiroshima, if you have spare time after visiting the Peace Museum, catch the ferry to scenic Miyajima Island (The ferry travel is free with JR pass).
        • I found there was more to see/do in Kyoto than in Osaka, so if you're not interested in Himeji Castle, perhaps spend 1 day less in Osaka, and 1 day more in Kyoto. YMMV.
        • In the event you can't store your luggage at the hotel (e.g. if you're staying at an AirBNB), all major train stations have storage lockers in multiple sizes, and the largest lockers will store all but the largest suitcases. You'll need lots of 100-Yen coins for these, on my recent trip (September 2023) the rate for the largest lockers was 700 Yen for up to 24 hours.

On this travel route, the JR pass will save you about $90, plus you get the free ferry travel to and from Miyajima Island, plus you can get free travel from Tokyo to Haneda and Narita airports (if you pick the JR train lines to travel on).

If you cut out the Himeji Castle trip, the saving is less, about $7, but there's still the free ferry and travel to the airports.

AND, with JR Pass, you won't have to worry about missing a train. Just roll up at any time and catch the next available Shinkansen, traveling in the carriages with unreserved seats. Or if you're traveling as a family or group, spend five minutes on the booking machines at the train stations, and reserve seats on the next available Shinkansen.

AND, with JR Pass, the day of your day trips can be varied without any difficulty, as you don't have to make bookings. If there's a thunderstorm on the day you wanted to see something outdoors, move your day trip to the next day. Bad weather expected on the day of your Hiroshima day trip? You don't have to take it on your last day in Osaka, you can take it on any day. Or even do the Hiroshima day trip while you're staying in Kyoto, the travel time will be slightly longer.

how do you add multiple train journeys to cart?

  • Fulfilment fee cancels out any discount. Can anyone advise if it’s cheaper to just buy on the day at the station?

    • +5

If you're spending as much as you do on a holiday, the stress of having to get the ticket and right train to save 10% seems nuts. Unless it's a peak hour trip, we've never had any issues at all just rocking up and buying when we needed it.

      • Great, we’re not fussy for a timetable so sounds like a plan!

        • +2

If you're travelling as a family too, hiring a car for anywhere outside of the major cities is a great way to go too. Driving is super easy, you can get to lots of great spots you can't without a car, and it's cheaper too for about 3ppl+

      • It depends. Last time we spent a good 30 mins lining up to get the Shinkansen tickets. That was Christmas and New Year period though.
After that I just book the tickets online on smart-ex system and pickup at the dedicated machines at the station.

there is a 10% "Fulfillment fee"
which makes the who thing pointless.
cheaper and better just buy at the station for flexibility.

  • Note that these have to be reedemed within 90 days. So basically this means you have to be in Japan within 90 days of your voucher date? I'm not sure if Klook will delay mailing your JR pass exchange order no earlier than 90 days from the date you put in. Anyone able to confirm from past experience?
