Festoon/Party Lights or Whatever They Are Called

G'day all,

We have a small patio at our place (6x3m) and were thinking of installing a light strip similar to this

There plenty of different ones available but they all have roughly the same specs.

Bulbs (x10) :S14 1W LED
Light color: 2700K Warm White

  1. Is this enough as main source of light for an outdoor patio or is it just decorative ?

  2. Have you seen a great bargain on this type of flights or do you have any recommendation ?

Cheers,
Happy sunday

    1. Decorative at best

    2. If it’s in full sun forget it at this budget

Consider this from Bunnings as least easy returns if/when it dies within 12 months of install. Iirc these still use non standard 36v driver with a funny water resistant connector

    • I have a few similar sets from Bunnings. They've been up for a few years. One set died and Bunnings replaced it without any hassles.

They look great and provide a nice ambience. The amount of light is enough that you don't walk into a table but not enough that you'd read a book.

I wouldn't buy plug in stuff like this from eBay. You don't know about the quality of the transformer.

  • We had some professionally installed to mains in an outdoor space that was around 8x5.

At night, at best, it's a nice glow. Something you'd sit and have drinks and nibbles under. We complemented with led strip lights for the realities of cleanup and for older people who want to see more clearly.

    I wouldn't buy a self installed set.

    • which festoon lights did you buy?

      • +1

They were ade by an electrician who specialised in them (Rustic Lighting in Gawler SA) but I think Covid got to them, which is a shame because I would 100% put them in my new place.

I would go professional for the following reasons:

        • wattage to suit your preferences
        • connection to switch inside
        • professional, marine grade install so no rust
        • made to the right length - no stupid overhangs

I also found with the professional ones that, as youre paying by the set meterage, anything you dont use, you keep. For example, if your entertainment area uses 35m and youve paid for a 50m run, generally youd get that 15m leftover and theyll put a plug on it etc.
I put my leftover in the garage (man cave), so I essentially got 2 jobs in 1 👍

  • Thank you all for your inputs.
I'll try to pick up a set at Bunnings later this week.

  • How did you go op?

I found the Reject shop and Kogan (Jolly Jingle brand) have a set of 10 (solar driven) for $30.

BBQ Galore also had a good deal going over Black Friday on what looks like the bunnings ones..

  • We have these https://m.catch.com.au/product/jingle-jollys-23m-festoon-lig…

They have been working great for well over a year under our patio roof, protected from the elements. My set came with replacement bulbs. They also come in different lengths.
