My son is coming from Japan next Week. Any advice on best Whiskey in the range of $100 - $150 would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Nikka from the Barrel would be my suggestion, or Nikka 12 if you can find it

My personal two favourites are Miyagikyo and Hakushu.
Both are single malt, you probably can't get the aged versions but not 100% sure. It's been 4-5 years since I've been there.
Have tasted many whiskies across many decades and these 2 are in my top 5 easily. Likely top 3 even.

Cautionary Tale
Received the following whisky as a gift in 2013, was only around $200. Opened it, didn't think it was anything special. 🤷🏻♂️
Randomly googled it a few years later, found out it could have been worth over $1000 if I sold it maybe? I'm not expert in rare whisky or the process of selling it.
Now I'm too sad to drink it, it sits on my shelf mocking me.
🤦😔

I can help you drink it if you like
Niigata Kameda New Pot Peated
Won some sort of newcomer award this year. Might be worth a try. Reasonably priced over there at 2800 yen (200ml).
Disclaimer: I don't drink alcohol, I just like reading about random stuff. And I like the Japanese character for turtle (Kame) it looks like a turtle.
Hibiki Harmony masters select is my favourite but have had little luck getting it the last few trips. I’ve had a lot more success in getting it in Taiwan.
Miyagikyo is usually available and is pretty great as well, about $100 a bottle at the airport compared to Daniel Murphy’s here being around $150.
If Hibiki Harmony is cheaper to buy in Japan, might be a good choice. Maybe it's export only tho?
