Tablet Apps/Games That Aren't Mindless Screen Time for Kids

I'm looking for some suggestions on apps or games that kids (5 and 7yo) would enjoy but not just mindlessly waste time on.

Specifically I'm thinking about "coding" games for the 7yo to teach him to think logically to solve puzzles.
And also some educational games would be nice. Tablets are Android.

Any ideas appreciated!

While not directly 'coding', Minecraft is basically digital lego that kids get to be creative and build things etc.

I would rather my kids play Minecraft than watch that endless crap they find on say youtube.

    • my kids do both….they watch youtube to watch other kids play minecraft….

Yes they love doing that too….. I kinda put watching other people play minecraft into the crap on YouTube pile myself, lots of yelling and screaming and click bait videos but someone once said it's like adults watching 'sport' or car racing on TV. So I understand why they like it.

You can actually get minecraft education edition and it has a coding feature built in.

      • That you can, but generally its only via a school paying for it. So not sure if the 5/7yo will have access to it.

    Kids follow parents example

Go to engage with your kids

    And follow through.

So find something both can do

Remove tablet, wait for boredom to commence, watch beautiful and original things happen.

Like kicking and screaming at all of the things?

  • Buy them a lego set

  • Swift Playgrounds has to be what you're looking for https://developer.apple.com/swift-playgrounds/

  • I have two girls age 3 and 6 (turning 4 and 7 soon).

They both do duolingo & scratch as mentioned above, however work is work, those are classes and won't replace what they enjoy to do.
I would suggest get them play minecraft or other games with their friends and siblings online.
online gaming with friends is a good way to learn working with others, communication and some decision making.
Also, when their friends is offline, all of the sudden games becamse much less interesting so they will be bored and stop :D

  • Here's an educational puzzle game.

Transmission, but I warn you before hand that it starts off easy and in the later levels gets difficult. Expect to help them out a quite a bit, who knows maybe you'll enjoy the game more than them.

    From Google Play Description:

Transmission, the mind-bending puzzle game about communication networks.

Connect to communicate! Transmission is a mind-bending puzzle game where you create communication networks and reveal their strengths.
