iPhone Restore from PC Backup Keeps Turning off

Hi All

I thought ozbargain will be the quickest way I get a response to my Qs so here it is:

I am trying to restore everything from a PC back up on my iphone 13 pro max, but it keeps disconnecting because the iPhone turns off just abit after I put my backup password in.

I have restarted both my PC and iphone,
I think the issue is that I noticed every time I try to restore from the back up itunes creates another back up file in the same folder as previous back up, previous back up was already about 250-300gbs and new ones take some more space 500mb ect.
My PC is only a 500gb ssd so my guess is that it needs more PC storage space for the back up?

If this is the case am I able to Cut the backup folder, put it on an external hard drive and back up from there where I have more storage?

  • Well iTunes always did suck and when it fails it doesn't usually give much, if any warning.

Once a week I copy my photos of my phone, here is the first part of my checklist:

    • [ ] 📱📷 Charge iPhone to at least 50% charge
    • [ ] 📱📷 Reboot iPhone
    • [ ] 📱📷 Disable iPhone Screen Lock, turn down screen brightness to minimum, put in airplane mode

Maybe it's all cope and myth, but it seems to help. Otherwise the phone might keep connecting and disconnecting.

    • I’ll try this because I cannot get my photos to copy off without some sort of random disconnection each time, so frustrating!!.

Everything else I’ve tried / googling hasn’t worked.

      • Try a different cable and usb port, could even try wifi sync checkbox to do it that way, rules out those as the issue.

        • Thanks very much, I have definitely tried another cable (and also use wifi sync via iTunes) but I’m trying to transfer via Windows media. I will try another USB port too just in case.

          • @EBG: If large files do them one at a time.

Avoid using ports with an Asmedia controller.

If still no luck, try save the items to an app folder in the phone that has file sharing in iTunes and use this to transfer them, it’s stable unlike windows explorer transfers.

  • You can create a symbolic link to an external HDD which iTunes should recognise. After creating the symbolic link you should be able to copy and paste the backup to the location on the hard drive and restore from there.

Not sure why your iPhone is turning off though, that seems weird. Might be worth contacting Apple support or going to an Apple store to see if they can help.

  • Move the old iPhone backup itself to another drive
    Eg: J:\Backup\NameOfYourIphoneBackup

Then use elevated command prompt window with admin privileges and enter the following.

    mklink /J “C:\Users\MAIN\Appdata\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\NameOfYourIphoneBackup” “J:\Backup\NameOfYourIphoneBackup”

This should allow iTunes to read from the backup on the other drive to restore, while the new created backup will go into the backup folder on C:\

  • I like that youre smart

I moved the back up while it was restoring the bank up to a hard drive to free up space on my lappy

    It worked 😎
