  • eggs never expire! Soldiering on loads of them.

  • My local Coles had them for 50c/700g 2 weeks ago, BBD is also 17/Oct.
still have 2 packs in my fridge now.

    • I'd have bought a Ballet at that price. shame nothing in nsw

      • Yes, Ballet tickets can be expensive.

    • My local Coles

      Which store?

  • are cage free ozbargain approved or is free range the minimum?

    • That's a good question. I want to know too

      • Yes, i know caged eggs are condemned here

        • Why, what did the caged eggs do wrong?

          • +5

@plmko: They were produced in unethical ways that are bad for the chickens producing them

            • @SpainKing: Bad for chickens, but better for humans. Free-range eggs get chicken poo all over them full of all kind of bacteria and diseases, caged hens have a system where this is avoided. Plus its significantly cheaper - one of the cheapest sources of protein. If you're good at avoiding getting any shell in it, wash your hands thoroughly after handling eggs, and the price difference is insignificant to you then by all means go free range, but for some people the price difference is a big deal and I dont have an issue with people buying caged eggs.

    • Only when free range are out of stock or super expensive. But if they are throwing out, it better to buy and not waste.

I'll only buy free range if the on-sale price matches caged or cage free eggs. Otherwise eggs are eggs, no need to justify spending extra.

How come there's still stock for $1?
In Sydney eggs are sold out even at rrp

Cage free = barn laid eggs.

Barn laid: "The large commercial sheds used to produce barn-laid eggs can be more than 100 metres long, 25 metres wide and contain up to 30,000 hens."

Free range start from about 10,000 chickens per hectare.

Personally, I don't buy anything that's more than 1,500 per hectare as that is a bit closer to what people may conceive to be 'free range'

    • Which brand do you buy?

      • +1

Generally I get Sunny Queen Free Range which are at Coles/Woolies mostly and they are 1,500 per hectare.

Although I found one recently that was organic certified and 750 per hectare so I bought them instead, still not bad value works out just over $1 per egg. I figure that's about as close as you'd get to just having random chickens roaming around your own place.

        • +1

$1 is pretty expensive for my OZB mind. But recently I got some other brand other than coles at 8$ per 700g and surprisingly they smelled a lot less when cooked.

        • I've noticed Sunny Queen are no longer available at my two local Woolies :(

    • 10,000 chickens per hectare = 1m2 per chicken if my maths isnt wrong. Not what people would imagine when they think of 'free range'.

      • +1

They don't limit each chicken to 1 sqm.

However, maybe think of it this way instead:
        - 1 chicken weighs about 2.5kg. By your calculation they get 1sqm to themselves at all times.
        - An average human weighs 80kg. So that 1 sqm for a chicken equates to 32 sqm for a human (by weight).

        To put that into perspective:
        - A standard workstation is 4-6 sqm. So that's up to 8 standard workstations per chicken.
        - The average bedroom size in Australia is 8-10sqm. So that's up to 4 bedrooms for a chicken.
        - An inner city studio apartment can range from 24-38sqm. So that's 1 studio apartment for a chicken.
        - Caged hens are only required 0.055sqm per hen. So that's over 18 times less than free-range.
        - Caged hens only have to have a cage height of 40cm. There is no height restriction on free-range, except maybe in a barn.

Cage free doesn't mean cruelty free

    • +3

But why neg the deal? Better someone buys this rather than goto waste.

      • +2

I guess one could argue that if they didn't exist in the first place, then they wouldn't need to be discounted so heavily to clear.

        • +1

One can also argue people could be vegans and there was no need to slaughter animals.

          • @[Deactivated]: Sure, but the collection of chicken eggs isn't going away so, lesser of two evils?

            • @magic8ballgag: Sorry mind not agreeing.

            • @magic8ballgag: Most food outlets in Australia are phasing out caged eggs by 2025. The exceptions being Yum! Brands (2030):
              - Pizza Hut
              - Taco Bell
              - KFC

  • What's the stock level? Anyone?

  • Labelling something as from Mornington Peninsula doesn't really mean anything. Some large egg production factories there.

    • +2

it does mean they are local product and less carbon footprints due to less distance.
