Get your house checked out and make sure the circuit you're using has proper surge protection installed on it.

The "protection" on power boards is miniscule compared to what is in your breaker box. If you have good protection in the breaker box you don't really need it in your power board.

  • Amazon frequently has the 6 and 8 port Belkin ones on special. They are my go to. The 8 port is bulky as though.

I do also have the Hpm individual switch ones but they feel really flimsy…

I got a cyberpower one a while ago… seems ok so far too but doesn’t have a good reputation here.

I often buy HPM 12 Outlet Surge Protected Powerboard when it is on special. You can get a smaller one, HPM 5 Outlet Surge Protected Powerboard

That'll cover you. I use surge protectors on almost all of my electrical equipment (TVs, Soundbars, Foxtel Box, Computers, Network equipment). Mixer of brand and no name without any issues thus far.

I wouldn't bother, unless you are in a lightning hotspot. But if you get hit by lightning, you have more problems than just your antennas. I've got more than a TV antenna and Foxtel on my roof, never had a problem. You are might likely going to have a house fire from lightning, then you have bigger problems.

Unless you are launching Rockets like SpaceX then you'll be fine.

    • Those HPM surge protectors only have an energy absorption of 175J and a loose clamping voltage of 775V.

If you are looking for a good one, I would go with the Crest Platinum.
Energy absorption of 1,800J, clamping voltage of 710V, spike voltage to 6,000V, 10 year warranty, and $75,000 connected equipment warranty.

CyberPower has 2750J surge suppression for $30-35 makes HPM ones look pretty weak.

    • Pretty good pricing too compared to HPM when they aren't on special. I might use these in the future when I run out of my HPM ones.

    • They look good just would like them to have AV connections

  • If the lights on a surge protector, the earth light is bright but the protection light is dull. Its still illuminating but dull compared to the earth light and also my other boards

Does the is mean it’s still working or needs replacing

    • ChatGPT says:

If a surge protector has indicator lights, they are typically there to provide information about the status of the device. Commonly, there are two types of lights on a surge protector:

      1. Earth/Ground Light: This light indicates that the surge protector is properly grounded. If this light is bright, it suggests that the grounding is good.

      2. Protection Light: This light indicates that the surge protection components are functioning correctly. If this light is on, it means the surge protector is actively providing protection against voltage spikes.

If the protection light is dull compared to the earth light and other surge protectors you have, it could be a sign of several things:

      1. Normal Variation: Different surge protectors, even from the same manufacturer, might have slight variations in the brightness of their indicator lights due to differences in LED quality, age, or other factors.

      2. Wear and Tear: Over time, as a surge protector absorbs surges, its internal components can degrade. If the protection light is dim or out, it might indicate that the surge protector's ability to protect against surges has diminished or is no longer functional.

      3. Faulty Indicator: The dim light might just be a result of a faulty LED or other minor issue with the indicator system, and the protection components might still be functioning correctly.

To be on the safe side, if you notice any irregularities with the indicator lights on your surge protector, especially the protection light, it's a good idea to consider the following:

      1. Check the Manual: Refer to the user manual or manufacturer's guidelines for your specific surge protector model. It might provide information on what different light behaviors mean.

      2. Replace the Surge Protector: If you're unsure about the status of your surge protector or if it's been in use for several years, it might be a good idea to replace it. Surge protectors have a limited lifespan, especially if they've been exposed to multiple surges.

      3. Consult with an Electrician: If you're concerned about the grounding or protection status of your surge protector, it might be worthwhile to consult with a professional electrician.

Remember, the primary purpose of a surge protector is to safeguard your electronic devices from voltage spikes. If there's any doubt about its functionality, it's better to be cautious and consider a replacement.

  • Ok thanks

The light is really dull compared to the earth light and compared to my other surge boards of the same brand

    • I would replace it just to be safe.

    • Will do thanks

  • Hey another question sorry

I have another surge board that it’s making noise when it’s on. Kinda like a power source sound, buzzing something like that. I have to put my head down to it to hear it but I was just wondering if this is normal or should I replace this one too?

      • Is it a high pitch noise or a buzzing sound?
      • How old is it and what is plugged into it?

I would possibly replace it and also just make sure too much isn't being drawn through the device.

      • It’s more of a high pitch but as I said I can only hear it when I have my head down to it. It’s in a ventilated cabinet so you can hear it easier then it being out in the open

        Just TV, modem and switch

If I turn it off and back on the sound is gone but comes back after 5-10min

        It’s an older one.

I’d be happy to replace it but finding one at a reasonable price and protection with Coaxial in and out is hard these days
