Advice on New Reading Glasses (+1.5 / +2). Luxoticca Such a Rip off. Specsavers? Other. BUPA Extras

Anyone here looked at reading glasses that don't look to dorky.
Last one from Luxotica franchise was $$$ and I lost it on a plane (Ray Ban frame)

I need the non reflective / blue light ones. Which seem to add quite a premium.

I have had mixed review from supersavers who seem to solve for a price point… but maybe that is fine.

I am inclined to buy two of the same as a backup.

Currently using Amazon generics that work ok, but not blue light or anti reflective (for video calls)….

I know they also optimise for your eye placement, which should reduce fatigue.

Getting to the stage where I mostly need glasses, especially with long PC days.

Any advice hugely appreciated.

I get some $$$ back on BUPA extras. Can't remember if they reset in July or January… anyways, it's been 2 years since my last custom pair.

Always had good luck with Zenni, as long as you order the correct size for your head or know how to adjust the arms yourself. I always order five or six at a time to save on postage, and I always get crazy Elton John ones I'll never actually wear, as well as some tinted for sunglasses. They charge extra for my prescription, but five pairs still cheaper than even a single pair at Specsavers et al.

    • Hi, so if I hear you right. When I do my updated eye exam, I take that prescription and I mail it to Zenni (enter it on the order) and they will make that specific lens for my eye?

Freeking cool if right. I am overdue a proper eye exam. Only started needing reading glasses very recently.

Thanks so much for the response

Yup. And get the salesperson at wherever you get tested give you your PD, your distance between pupils. It's easy enough to do yourself, just hold a ruled up to your eyes and measure distance between pupils. But they may as well do it for you for free. They won't be happy about it, because it'll tell them you are going to order online. But they will usually do it for you. If they won't, get someone else to hold a ruler up to your face.

Maybe try a few pairs on in the store and get the sales person to give you your ideal temple/bridge/etc. measurements. Then get all those measurements and choose your ideal glasses online.

If you need some to tide you over until your new private health year, tried some of the DresdenGo ones and they were good - were recently 50% off during the Amazon sales, will probably go on sale again for Black Friday https://www.amazon.com.au/s?k=dresdengo they had a anti glare coating on them that my Amazon Opulize ones didn't have

So let me get this straight, you're paying out the ass for the stingiest heath fund known to man when it comes to getting rebates (for which you don't even know when they reset - calendar year by the way), have forgone last year's allowance because you couldn't be bothered using it (despite paying thousands for the privilege) and only now are you clamping down, putting on your financially responsible hat and complaining about costs? Oh and you're dumb enough to have a history of leaving them on a plane.

You're like a BMW driver complaining about maintenance costs.

    • Yes, I think so.
Time has become quite challenging with 3 kids and travel, so some things I fall in the trap of set and forget. Luckily I have learnt not to sweat it.

I don't think it is quite that much. I believe it is $150 or $200 for glasses a year? so that is the loss. We use the extras for Chiro.

Good question though on Value for Money.

We tried Medibank and ran away quickly to BUPA. Our experience has been very reasonable so far, and I value my time over fighting fine print.

    don't look to dorky.

I don't know about that qualifier but I just buy up on the $40 specsavers glasses.

I actually lost a pair last week - no biggy, there are a few replacements in my nick-nacks drawer.
