Outrageous Brand Name Markups

I noticed these Myer slides RRP $69.95 in store yesterday that are the exact dupes of these Big W slides RRP $10.

There were many colours & sizes that were unavailable in the Myer store & also online so people are paying the higher price which is nuts when you consider that you can get almost 7 pairs when they're not reduced & 5 pairs when they're on special (plus receive change) by buying them at Big W.

Has anyone come across any other brand name markups for exactly the same item?

Some people would not want to be seen dead in BigW thus happy to pay the dignity/vanity tax.

I must have missed that module when I completed my finishing school tuition in Switzerland ;)

when I completed my finishing school tuition in Switzerland

Did you attend the one in Geneva, Bern or Zurich ?

    • Same issue many Australians have with shopping at Aldi.

    • Nice slides
      Pity not available in MENS.

They look slightly different imo. Zoom in on the pattern on the strap that goes over the toes.

Are they the same material and density? I've seen similar slides before, some of them are so hard it would be uncomfortable to wear.

    • My MiL actually bought the Myer pair because they were on sale. She wasn't with us when we later saw them at Big W but I sent her a photo.

The synthetic moulding is soft & they're quite comfortable although not my style.

The $10 bigw offering seems seriously cheap lol
Marketing and sales tactics aside, you can’t even buy it from Ali express or Temu for $10.

Temu has it at $10.67 shipped (and assumes no funny business like shipping you idk a $2 pair of earphones. )

Bigw you can pickup and easy returns but if you want it shipped it’s 7.90 extra

      Interesting about Temu pricing.

When I saw them in Big W, I thought they were kid's shoes for the price as someone had misplaced a XS pair in the kids section.

      • My misso has really small feet so sometimes the largest size in girls size is better fit than xs in women’s haha maybe that’s what happened

        • A Vietnamese friend usually wears size 5 and sometimes size 5 in womens shoes is too big for her!

          @kajke & Jimmy -
Small feet here too - a lot of places are now starting at Size 7, 35s have all but disappeared.

  • Depending on the specs the sandals were produced to, as well as the volume ordered, the cost to Myer & Big W is probably a fair bit different. There's a lot more Big W's in Australia than Myers. Plus Big W being part of Woolworths may factor into the groups buying power. Who knows?

    • I don't doubt that the cost price for each of the brands is probably different although considering both have an online presence, then it's not just down to volumes per physical store.

  • "Exact dupes"?

Copying, counterfeits, "homages" etc are so rife in the fashion industry it's entirely plausible that there's $50 worth of difference between the two. Doubly so given the decline in quality of some popular brand names. I recently bought a pair of birkenstocks from a prominent online store. I'm still not 100% convinced that I haven't been sold cheap knock-offs.

There is no way that there is $50 worth of difference between the 2 pairs; they're synthetic construction.

You should check whether there are Birkenstock markings that would show whether your pair are authentic or not or take them into the Birkenstock Soul store in Petersham.

Buy both and wear the myer on your left foot and bigw on your right and see which wears out faster

    • +1

      this is 4D kinda thinking

    • You are assuming that both of my foot are in perfect symmetry.

      • Since Big W version is a knock off - it won't be exactly the same size as Myer version. :)

  • +1

Hard to say unless you wear both for any period of time. If the cheap ones don’t fit properly then the blisters aren’t worth it. You really can’t tell by looking at them. As others have said somebody has put money into designing this style of shoe and I bet it isn’t the brand sold by Woolworths.

Daison do a version of Crocs that are nowhere near the quality of the original but if you just wear Crocs around the house they are probably as an OK substitute.

  • … exactly the same item

Try buy 1 from BigW and return it at Myer using your MiL's receipt.

  • "Has anyone come across any other brand name markups for exactly the same item?"

Loads of stuff. That's the whole point of having a brand name.

  • Marketing premium. Myer tries sell the whole 'shopping experience' when you shop and buy products from them.

Always expect to get ripped off by them as they will add this to final cost of all their items. David Jones is even worse at this practice.

  • They are fundamentally identical, but for the names: Ravella or Wave Zone. As your heel will be covering the name, who cares?
On my calibrated monitor, the Zones actually look black whereas the Ravellas dark gray.

  • Sadly probably the most common business model in Australia is to find some cheap piece of junk on alibaba.com or similar, wrap heaps of marketing BS around it and then sell it to suckers for a premium price . In the case of fashion find a cheap sweatshop somewhere…

The days of innovative product development and designed in Australia have sadly been destroyed by marketing …

A "Friend of a Friend" owned a well known Australian fashion brand in Australia. This brand has factory outlets in addition to their premium outlets around Australia.. when my friend asked him if he was loosing money on the shoes that retail for $150 being sold at $20 at the factory outlet, he just laughed and said the shoes cost the business around $2.00/pair landed in Australia so even selling them for $20 they still had a very comfortable profit margin.

    • Your “friend of a friend” should be careful boasting about that. If it gets out on social media with the company name associated with it then his company could be punished.

You care to name the company to start the ball rolling?

    • I had a (different) "friend of a friend" who worked in the import clearance section of Australian Customs back in the day - some of the stories he told of the retail mark-ups on various post duty-paid goods were eye-watering.

  • Expensive must be better.

    • Is that you, Mum?
