  Yep 600D should be good for your budget. But if you're not planning to ever change lenses etc (which is the purpose of DSLR), you may want to consider an alternative such Canon G15 that just came out recently. It is a semi-DSLR but is much more compact than the 600D.

  I also like camera paradise. I bought a camera through them as did my brother and no complaints. My brother needed the camera fixed under warranty and he was very impressed with the service camera paradise provided for that.

  <$700 you're looking at either Canon EOS 550D, 600D, 650D.

  But from the sounds of your needs maybe a DSLR isn't what you need.

  Maybe a better alternative for you will be Canon G1 X or Canon G15 camera.

    SLR = single lens reflex.
    DSLR = digital single lens reflex. The D was added with the invention of digital slr's.

  Why not have a look at the Sony RX100? It uses a 1inch sensor with a fast 1.8 Zeiss lens (at the wide end). Every review I have read has raved about it as the best compact camera by far and with image quality equal to a DSLR with kit lens. $700 at http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod9172.htm

  I would suggest one of the mirrorless systems. Most have the same size sensors as DSLR's so better image quality than compacts and theoretically the same image quality as it's mirrored siblings but in a smaller size..

    No offence but if you're asking that then yeah…just get a compact camera (Canon G or Powershot S series) and it will do wonders for you.
