Computing and Networking Peripherals Storage – Suggestions Needed

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good storage solution for stuff like ethernet cables and chargers and old HDDs/SSDs? We've been moving houses a lot recently (moved twice within the last year and half) and I've had to put the old file cabinet I used to dump it all in to other use. I still have most of this computing and networking "stuff" in moving boxes with nowhere to unpack them.

I've been thinking of heavy duty storage containers, like this one from Bunnings so in the case that I need to move again, it's already packed. I'm not too keen on buying furniture for this as it reduces portability.

Anyone got any other suggestions? Is there anything that's particularly popular for this sort of stuff? The main issue with the Bunnings container is that it's a bit of an eyesore – in other words, first world problems.

  • Wasn't it that computers were supposed to make our lives simpler and easier?
A milk crate is as good as anything, and find somewhere out of sight to store it.

    • I'd love to put it in some random crate. XD Unfortunately an open crate like that will just collect a metric tonne of dust. I need something that's closed and secure.

  • bunnings storage container

yo wtf, these seem really cheap for what you are getting? i need to suss this out over weekend lol

    • They do look to be very useful. Only issue is they don't look too nice but I can just put them out of sight. I didn't want to commit until I knew if there were other options tho.

      • what else were you thinking? i just have mine old tech (kb's hard drives mice etc) in old boxes i got from bunnings years ago in the space under the stairs..

        • I can't think of anything else, which is why I made this thread. :)

  • Leave most of it packed and see what you actually use. After some period of time, drop it off in e-waste.

    • See, some of the stuff is definitely stuff I'll probably use at some point. I've got ethernet cables of various sizes because I'm an IT guy. I've got old HDDs and SSDs because I ripped them out of old PCs and they still have stuff in them. I've got a condenser microphone that I might need on rare occasions. I've got some powerboards too which can come in handy if I move again and I need to set up a lotta devices in a room with few outlets. Pretty useful stuff. Just not in use right now.

        A definite maybe.

I cut my collection down a while ago. I had a heap of cables that I barely used. I think i've ended up having to buy one or two things but that's not too big a deal.

I consolidated data on old hard drives and either put them in enclosures or e-wasted them.

        • Yeah, nah, fair enough. That's definitely solid advice.

Mine are in a large container, very much like the Bunnings one you posted, but closer to the 100L size. All sorts of cables. I am sure if there was ever an apocalypse, I will be all set for wires.

I recently dealt with all the old laptops I had lying around. The laptops go to e-waste, the batteries were dismantled and now I have a drawer full of 18650 batteries. More than half of the batteries were still good, which was quite surprising to me.

Usually it's the batteries that are the first to die, in my experience with laptops. You've got a little treasure hoard there. Could sell them to people whose batteries have died.
