In the process of getting braces done, insurance finally passed the 12 month mark so I thought I could claim something back. Unfortunately found in the fine print that it has to be a provider they have selected.
If I move health care providers will I be able to claim the rest of my procedure through them and not wait the 12 months or would I need to wait 12 more months?
Most t/c seem to say the waiting period done will carry over but don’t know if this works in practice.

waiting periods carry over - however this applies for the same limit. example: your current insurer gives you $1000 back and you served your 12 months and move to a new insurer (say insurer B). Insurer B will honour the waiting period already served for the $1000 (provided the new cover, covers the entire amount), however anything above will have waiting periods on, i.e. Insurer B ortho $2000, $1000 is available now, but the remaining $1000 has a 12 month wait.
EDIT: Also worth noting, it's odd that your insurer rejected you as you didn't see one of their ortho providers. When I worked in the industry about 5-8 years ago, preferred providers for Ortho was not a thing - as long as the ortho was registered to practice within orthodontics, you were good to go. However, it's been a while so things may have changed.
Worth checking that your insurer covers the orthodontics provider prior to signing up (otherwise you'll be in the same boat as now)

When I tried to claim they said to check the t/c as the card kept declining. Checked and they only pay to selected providers.
Why don't you call them and ask ?
Generally it will be the same cover and conditions as your current one until the wait period is over.
