The Ultimate Gift Card Online Use

Hi all, I just have some query on if we can use The Ultimate Gift Card Online, let's say in Officeworks.

I want to price match an item but I can only do that through phone call, will I be able to use or is it possible to use The Ultimate Gift Card for purchase of price matched item?

Also, another thing. Even if we are not price matching in Officeworks is it possible to use this gift card to purchase online? I am not sure how online purchase from this gift card works and if you are able to use it for online purchase from JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks.

Please let me know how these work. Last time I checked JB Hi-Fi people said it can be only used in store, it cannot be used for price matched item, so anyone have any idea please share your knowledge.

Thank you.

  • @WookieMonster Please suggest, share your knowledge. Thank you.

  • You can use Ultimate gift cards online. But I think you treat them like credit cards ie when you get to the checkout on the JB or OfficeWorks or whatever site, don't choose to pay with gift card, choose credit card. You'll see there's 2 different numbers on the card, you want to use the 16 digit one as a credit card, along with the 3-digit CVV.

If your card doesn't show an expiry date you can look it up on the Ultimate gift card site and put that in as the card expiry date.

    • Ok. Thank you for this knowledge. Would you have any idea if it will work for office works price match through phone, i provide that 16 digit number to the person on the phone and then cvv. Should work. Need to try it out, if anyone has tried it that way.
      Thank you AngusD.
      Cheers

      • I've not used one of these over the phone and I don't really shop at OfficeWorks much. I don't see why it wouldn't work one way or the other, though ie either using the gift card number or the credit card number, surely one or the other should work.

        • No worries. Thank you for the information.

          Cheers

The source of truth for how participating retailers accept Ultimate gift cards is the Ultimate gift card website. If you go to the webpage for a Ultimate gift card type, there will be filters for three different redemption types:

    • Instore
    • Online
    • Exchange for eGift

For example, if you go to the Ultimate Home gift card webpage and click on the Online filter, it will show you all the participating retailers that accept Ultimate gift cards on their online stores (including JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys and Officeworks). You have already been told how to actually redeem an Ultimate gift card online, so I will not go over that again.

Keep in mind there are two different types of Ultimate gift cards:

    • eftpos - this cannot be used online at any participating retailer, but is also being phased out.
    • Visa - this can be used online at participating retailers that choose to accept Ultimate gift cards on their online website.

In terms of the commentary you may have heard about Ultimate gift card redemption restrictions on online stores, it could be related to three things:

    1. You can only redeem 1x Ultimate gift card in an online transaction at a participating retailer, because you generally cannot do split payments online between multiple Visa cards.

    2. A participating retailer may reject an Ultimate gift card, because it fails any security checks they may implement on their online store. For example, JB Hi-Fi uses Riskified to determine the likelihood of a transaction being fraudulent, and this appears to be based on information provided in the transaction.

    3. Not all participating retailers accept Ultimate gift cards on their online store. For example, IKEA accepts Ultimate gift cards in their physical stores, but not their online store.

To answer your question regarding Officeworks and price matching, the only restriction I know that Officeworks places on Ultimate gift cards is that you cannot use them to purchase other gift cards.

I am actually not sure whether it is actually possible to use an Ultimate gift card over the phone with Officeworks. There is a chance it may work, because Officeworks could use the same payment gateway for over the phone purchases as online purchases, but I really do not know!

    • Thank you for the information. Really helpful. I will keep on eye on if it is a eftpos or a visa card. Thank you.

      Cheers

Just tried to purchase something with the digital 'Ultimate Home' gift card online at officeworks but it just doesn't work. I've double checked there is sufficient balance in the card.

      Same here.
      - Checked that my gift card is visa not eftpos
      - Entered as credit card using the 16 digit card number and CVV
      - Used the expiry date listed on the Ultimate gift card site
      - Checked that Officeworks is still listed as an online participant on the Ultimate gift card site

      • It's strange right?
I had tried it in store before and it didn't work then.. I was in a rush so I just paid with my credit card and forgot to follow it up..
Have you contacted anyone? Ultimate gift cards or officeworks?

      • Any luck? Running into the same issue, what a headache

        • Sorry for late reply. I gave up and didn't try again. In hindsight, saved me some $$$

      • I just purchased a $150 Ultimate Student card just to make a purchase of the same price on Officeworks online and it keeps saying an error occurred after entering the details into credit card section. Did anyone find a solution?

        • Purchased an Ultimate Active card and it doesn't work on 99 bikes online. I've called Ultimate multiple times but eventually they closed the case saying they didn't see any rejected transactions. I'm going to try it in-store but reading this thread makes me pessimistic.

  • Come here because of the same issue, but it was Kogan, none of my Ultimate home card works so far.

Tried as CC card, that's the only way the Kogan will accept the card number, but it only allows one card per transaction. Later I have emailed both Kogan and the ultimategiftcards.com.au many times, asking for help, instruction or even just clarification, none had replied so far.

It is already feeling like a scam, later I will bring those cards to the JB or TGG to try.

Thinking of reporting this to the ACCC as false advertising, just way too much troubles to use those Gift cards for online shopping.

    • Did you end up having any luck @RooBun or @Bard? I have 3 Ultimate eGift Cards for Students, none of which work with Officeworks online. I have sent an enquiry through to Ultimate Gift Cards but am yet to receive a response.

      • We went to JB-HiFi and they accepted them but strangely some as Credit card and some as Saving Card, you will need to ask the staff to enter the pay mount first, then swipe your card on the EFTPOS machine, finally enter the pin. All I can tell you is the staff was absolutely hating those gift cards, just trouble for them too.

As for Kogan, you can only use ONE card as CC card on check out, so those cards are not very easy to use.

Those ultimate gift cards, they save money but don't save time…

  • Just chiming in given recent comments, my $100 Ultimate Gift Card expiring in 2026 didn't work both online and in-store at Anaconda. Going to have to chase this one up…

  • Should have looked here before getting this bloody gift card - Just tried it at Officeworks online and the balance of the card isn't enough for the full purchase so it can't be used as a credit card, and the gift card (which you can specify an amount) requires 17 digits, rather than the 16 of this card.

I've had bad experiences with these sorts of multi-store cards in the past, but never used this brand before, so I gave it a try. The fact that it can't be used for the intended purpose means it's illegal under the ACL. I'm going to call Ultimate Gift cards in the morning on 1800 862 126 and make it very clear they're in serious legal trouble for this kind of crap.

    • Did you get a result out of this?

      • Haha, what do you think? They apologised and said they'll look into it. Basically 'tough luck, sucker!' I'm guessing they get a lot of complaints like this, but their lawyers have probably found a loophole or something. Might be something the ACCC could look into, but they don't care unless there are hundreds of complaints about the issue.

  • This was a crap experience, because it’s a CC, you can’t do split payment online at Officeworks.
I was lucky that the phone my son wanted was available in-store and split payment worked there.

  • I just discovered there's a "HIM" card from TCN (The Card Network) and it's NOT the same as the Ultimate Him card.
There's an hour of my life I won't get back…
    Thanks for this helpful discussion.

  • so wanted to buy a new iphone and had to purchase 43 x $50 ultimate giftcards from coles with 10% off (had to goto multiple coles, some let me buy 10 at a time others were adamant you could not purchase more than 5 cards at a time). Officeworks & JB can't use then online as credit cards as they can only accept 1 credit card for the entire transaction. I was dreading the thought of spending 1.5 hours in officeworks just manually swiping all of these cards and the hate I would have been receiving from the staff, but then I worked out you can convert the $50 ultimate to $50 JB e-vouchers and they will accept the new numbers as giftcards, still took me around an hour but used all the cards in 1 transaction and there seems to be no limit with JB giftcards.
