These high end Oral-b brushes are just the same mechanically as the cheap ones but with useless gimmicks like bluetooth and cleaning modes (which is just oscillation at a different speed). They could add the same features to the cheap models for a trivial manufacturing cost, instead they just mark-up the profit margins and make up some BS marketing hoping to trick some customers. Don't waste your money and get the low end model instead.

    • LOL, no they're not. I have one of those brushes for like 6 - 7 years after I had the cheap ones many times before. Useless features or not, they're heaps better both in strength and longevity. The battery lasts much longer and even after so many years they work like on day one.

      • So have i and i realised they are just marked up and padded with gimmicks. I currently have one high end model and one low end model and mechanically they are essentially the same

        • Mid range has pressure notification which is handy
Agreed that high end has useless gimmicks like AI

          • @squidz: Pressure sensor and warning are essential!

        • This one has higher oscillation frequency than the next models down, $100 each good for these given its a twin pack, $10 signup.

Agree not worth spending any more on the higher models but these ones are good and reasonable.
Don't need no fancier travel case and other stuff.

I agree re: modes, but I'd suggest avoiding models that don't have a pressure sensor.

      • You have to really be brutalising your gums to need that. I have one with a sensor and by the time it activates the load is really uncomfortable. Perhaps some people are oblivious when they are brushing to hard

        • Perhaps some people are oblivious when they are brushing to hard

          Lots of people are.

        • Yep. I was one of those people. When I got one, it would light up heaps until I trained myself not to push as hard against my teeth.

@Name: Hmm you have to press very hard for the red light to come on. Just hold it with 2 or 3 fingers.

The Genius model just feel so much better in your hand

    • I have the 3000-series and you'd think they offer the best value in the range because they don't have the non-essential features but still have useful ones like pressure sensor. But their battery don't last as long. They constantly require recharging and it takes forever to finish. I had the 9000-series in the past I remember the battery lasting for a long time.

    One for each hand

  • Listing is unclear about whether this "premium travel case" does charging. Really reduces the utility of the case if it can't charge.

    • I believe it does. I had this case in the past. Anyway look at this video for confirmation: https://youtu.be/UgXA1glGKhY?t=74
It also has a USB-A port for charging a second device. They also provide the AC cord for the case.

      • No, it doesn't. I bought two 9000 models 5 years ago for family members and they came with charging cases. I then bought myself a 8000 model (like this) and it did not. The case looks almost identical in the photos, but no charging. I challenged Shaver Shop about false advertising (because the description of the case in both 8000 and 9000 models was identical at the time) and they eventually sent me a charging case for it.

This case is a just a "fancy" looking plastic case.

        • The charging case is crap anyway, has to be plugged in (ie doesn't hold charge like a power bank) and a proprietary connector isn't it.
When travelling you don't want too many special cables and adapters and crap, should be USB C.
The normal ones like this are fine.

          • @G-rig: The problem with the normal 8000 case & charger is that the charger isn't multi-voltage, so effectively you don't have a charger if traveling in a country with lower than 220V.

I do agree that it would be handy if the charging case (for the 9000) had a cable with a standard plug, but the propriety charging cable is still smaller/lighter (for travel) than the standard toothbrush charger for the 8000.

            • @Andy01: Ahh that makes sense, overlooked that. Still don't think it's worth the extra for the IQ models and the much more expensive brush heads. Can pick up charging travel cases on amazon, may be some better third party stuff around.

        • So they must have updated the case in the later packaging? That sucks if true.

  • I haven’t used the cheaper models so I can’t compare. I put these on full strength and use none of the features.

When I tried the mouth tracking it was worthless. The pressure sensor only triggers by accident and so does not seem useful unless you have fine motor issues.

It’s a great deal but the travel case is garbage, and the charger is typically 240V only, so these aren’t suitable for travel.

    • the charger is typically 240V only, so these aren’t suitable for travel.

Unless you're not travelling often with you electric toothbrush to Japan and North America… Ie. it's good for the vast majority of people and countries across the globe and a significantly bigger issue is the plug adapter.

    • Not quite correct regarding the charging travel case (which these 8000 models do not have). The stand-up bathroom charger is 220-240V, but the charging case that comes with the 9000 model is rated from 100-240V, so it is perfect for travel. It also has a USB charging output so you can charge your phone overnight using it.

  • Is this better than the iO style ones that are advertised as better but are cheaper with the sale?

    • I don't know much about the iO models except that the brush heads are significantly more expensive, which puts me off them because the life cycle cost is going to be a lot higher.

The RRP of a 4 pack of iO heads is $75 (and they are rarely on sale) vs under $20 frequently for a standard 4 pack, so about 4x the price (extra $60 per year).

      • They do say they last longer I believe. But I agree the heads are a lot more

        • I thought they also recommended replacing after 3 months, but I may be wrong ?

          • @Andy01: That depends on how you use it - most people would be fine prolonging that twice of three times.

I know a person who has a Brita water-filtering jug. They use it twice a week when they have guests.
I know a family of four with the same type of jug, they fill it up a dozen times a day.

Both households change the filter every 1-2 months, because that's what the manufacturer (who is also selling the filters) says.

    • iO are overpriced and not necessarily better.

Mine's battery life dropped after a year. As for the build and features, I see no quality difference. Unless you count a useless colour display or a phone app companion a quality feature. I just brush paying attention to the "quarter counter" (all Braun toothbrushes give you an indication every 30s) and the pressure warning - many non-iO models have it.
