Advice on HDD Replacement for My Dell AIO

Hi everyone. I had some great advice here when I needed help with upgrading my SSD on this same PC - Dell Inspiron 5490 All In One. From that advice I bought the correct SSD and managed to install it with no problems. This PC also has a 1TB 2.5 HDD as a secondary drive. Lately it's been quite noisy and whirring a lot. I've had this machine a few years now and I'm wondering if the HDD is starting to go on the fritz.

I've looked in device manager and the info there tells me this: ST1000LM035-1RK172 - when I google that I come up with info on a Seagate drive with this:

Discontinued / Replaced By: ST1000LM048 Seagate Mobile ST1000LM035 / 1RK172-566 1TB 2.5in 6Gbps 5.4K RPM 512e SATA HDD

I'm looking at getting a new one obv - and I may as well get a 2TB. I just want to make sure I'm buying the right one before parting with my $$.

There's a few on Amazon and eBay ( as well as other places on google - all varying prices). I think this looks right.

Yer I know - China, but the feedback is pretty good - only 1 neg in 12 months. I've bought tons of computer bits and pieces from China - not a HDD but RAM and stuff that's always been fine. Actually can't remember the last time I had to neg anyone.

Mostly I'm just checking if this looks like the CORRECT drive for my PC. If anyone has any cheaper/better suggestions feel free to suggest. I really don't want a refurbished/used drive - brand new only.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

    Why not get another ssd?
They are cheap enough these days.

Pretty much any drive with a SATA connection will do the job, just look up the specs you want and whack it in.

(Protip, get yourself a USB to SATA converter so you can format the ssd and copy the contents of your failing drive, then you only have to put the ssd in the machine when you;re finished.)

Yes, basically any 2.5” sata drive will work.

However don’t buy a HDD, you can replace it with a SSD for the same price. It will be silent and last longer. Something like this https://www.centrecom.com.au/team-group-cx2-2tb-25-sata-iii-…

Get something like this - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/804439

  • There was only one SSD slot and it was very hard to find the right SSD for this PC. It came with a 256GB one as Drive C and it eventually filled and when I went to find an upgrade for it, it wasn't easy. I recall at the time I could only find the relevant SSD on the Dell AU website for some rip off price even for the 512GB. I ended up getting one from the US for just over $100 which was much cheaper than I could get in AU even paying postage and customs. But anyway I only have the space now for the 2.5 HDD. This is the first Dell I ever bought and I'll never buy another one when this finally carks it!!

      2.5" slot is standard sata

Have a look at the links posted previously, any of them will replace your hdd and give you the better, cheaper ssd

      Eww boot drive is horrible

      • ooohhhh I thought the SSD and HDD (slots on this pc) were only for 2 different things - thank you so much for explaining that to me!! I will open it up again and have another look at the "HDD" area - I know it will be a different shape etc to the Dell M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD square thing that I changed before. I just thought that other space had like a Laptop HDD in it - had no idea one of those different/bigger SSDs could go in there.

Unfortunately hindsight is a lovely thing

      • Oh wow I paid AUD 140.26 for a 512GB in Aug last year. We live and learn - and find things cheaper later haha.

  • But if this PC only has one SSD slot for one particular type of SSD where will I put it (sorry I have OCD - take things literally etc so I'm only thinking tunnel visually - HDD dying = replace HDD). I do appreciate the other perspectives. I always remind myself I need to also look for zebras not just horses ;)

HDDs and SSDs are generally pretty interchangeable, which they are for your 2.5"

You are referring to SSD slot and HDD slot - we need to expand further on what these actually mean.

SSD slot = physical M.2 slot, size 2230/2242, interface PCIe 3.0x4 NVME
HDD slot = physical SATA socket, size 2.5 inch, interface SATA 3 (aka SATA 6Gb/s)

Your HDD slot will take any 2.5 inch drive, as long as it has a SATA interface. The good news is that SSDs also come in 2.5 inch formats, and those ones are all SATA interface.

A 2.5 inch 2TB HDD in 2023 at $116 is very overpriced and very slow. Please consider a SSD (example).

    • Ok thank you so much for that info. I haven't bought anything yet. I've bought from Centrecom before so know they are good. I am so grateful for everyone's input and so glad that I posted here first before jumping in and buying anything!!

    SSD, any.

Just take any 2.5"x7mm SATA SSD
Go you youtube and try to learn to unscrew few things.
Believe it or not the replacement is very simple.

First things first - backup your failing drive NOW.

THEN look for a replacement drive following plenty of the useful advice given already above ☝🏼️

Good morning to everyone. Sorry it's taken a while but I've come back to say thank you to eveyone for their great advice. I ended up buying the 2TB SSD from Centrecom as recommended by @tekisei ^^

It fit perfectly and yes I did get help on opening up my PC from YT - I found the same vid that I used last time I opened it up some time ago to change that 256 SSD to the 512. It was a while ago I did that so I needed a refresher.

I did have a bit of a scare when restarting the PC when there was no D drive listed. So a quick Google told me I had to allocate and initialise?? the new disk in Disk Management. I did that and all was good.

Thank you all again - very much appreciated.
