Slow internet connection

I am living in Magill, SA and do not have fast internet connection. I think it is due to the distance between my home and the Norwood exchange. Do you think I can improve the speed of my internet connection by 1. switching ISP, 2. switching to a new modem/router?

My current ISP is with Internode. My modem is Netcomm NB5Plus4W (at least 3-4 years old).

Speed test (from http://www.speedtest.net/) shows 1.81 Mbps (now at 11:50pm Sunday). It was 0.63 Mbps yesterday (Saturday) night.

Thanks in advance.

I think you are better off posting this on whirlpool.

  • Can I ask how far from the exchange you are and if you have ADSL1 or 2??

    • According to TPG map, it is about 3.5K from Exchange. Mine is ADSL2+.

  • Hello dial up speeds, almost.

    • Nothing like dial up speeds, which ended at 56K.

      • There both slow

  • To clarify speed can be measured in bits per second and bytes per second (often Mbps and MBps respectively, but not always). If yours is the latter, then this is quite normal and reasonable speeds. If it is the former then you are definately on the slow side. Try calling internode and asking, you may not be on a suitable profile.

    • It's the former, i.e. bits per second.

  • Plug your address in here http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/ It will give you a rough estimate of what speed you should expect.

If you believe your connection is below what it should be then call Internode. They can run tests to determine if there is a problem and where the problem is.

    • It says…
You are 2965 m from NRWD as the crow flies.
Estimated cable length of 3706.25 m.
      Estimated speed of 2500
      Zone 1

Is the speed in Kbps or KBps? If it is Kbps, then it is slow.

  • 3.7km isn't that far from the exchange. I just hooked up my parents with Exetel and their property is 7,5km away from the exchange. Because 7.5km is quite a far distance, I made sure I had the right router for them. I got them a Billion 7800N because it had the most recent broadcom chipset that handles long cable length, very well.

Their ADSL2 speeds vary between 600-800 KB/s which isn't really too bad for such a distance.

  • Hi Mischief, Would you mind doing me a favour by entering your parent's address in http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/ and tell me what you get for the Estimated speed?

    Mine was …
You are 2965 m from NRWD as the crow flies.
Estimated cable length of 3706.25 m.
    Estimated speed of 2500
    Zone 1

Just would like to compare the Estimated speed you got for your parent's address to mine before I go buy myself a Billion 7800N.

    Tia.
