Here's something a little different. A 100W capable 3-in-1 retractable cable combining USB-C, Lightning and microUSB into the one cable. Baseus have dropped the price by 20% from their regular price that then stacks with the current eBay coupon codes OCT15/OCT17. It seems they've invested some time to produce a decent cable with a more robust retraction mechanism, which should mean it'll perform better than some I've used in the past that worked poorly and ended up getting binned. And being rated at 100W, you can use it to charge your USB-C laptop as well.

The claimed charging performance for various iPhones is:

      If you click on the description and read down the bottom, it claims it can at 5V/3.5A max each

        I don't believe that; the cable would have to negotiate a 15V or 20V charging profile and then have its own charger circuitry to output multiple high current 5V loads.

        Most likely it will slow charge each device.

      Definitely. There were not any iPhones between the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 15 that still need a connection.

      • They'll still be phased out and not manufactured anymore though, lightning cable dead as of this year

      It depends if your car has wireless AndroidAuto / CarPlay or if it needs a cable.

      Usually the multi connector cables are power only, no data connection. If your car supports wireless auto/car play then sure it will work. No idea why spaceflight was negged.

    I bought a couple of these exact Baseus products a while ago on Aliexpress and it wasn't at all what I expected.

    The 3 cables are super annoying, especially when you're trying to plug your phone in in the dark.
    I thought I could work around that by plugging one of the 3in1 cables into my USB charger, and just using the single USB-C cable for my phone - this doesn't work.
    You have to use the single USB-C cable in the charger, and you have to use the 3in1 cable for your phone or device - otherwise it doesn't charge.

    Also, the retractable functionality is crap (for my use case).
    When you pull the 3in1 cable to plug into your phone, the other cable extends at the same rate as well.
    So for example, you can't just plug this into a charger beside your bed, then increase/decrease the length of cable going into your phone without also increasing the length of the cable that plugs into your charger, which causes the circle plastic thing falling off your bedside locker.

    Bit hard to explain but hopefully that makes sense - it's actually shown in the pictures but may not be obvious until you've used it.

    Stopped using both of them within about a week and just got a braided, twisty/spring type of cable from UGreen instead which is quite short until it's unsprung at full length.

      • Hmm, I don't see it saying anything about it being independent anywhere.
        Only thing referencing the function says that you can pull either cable and it'll extend, which is true… but it extends both cables at the same time.
        The image I'm referring to is where it has "Pull left, Pull right, Pull Both".

        But if you look in the 5th image where it shows the 5 different lengths - it clearly shows both cables are extending at the same time.
        You can't extend one without extending the other and the picture that shows the blow-up of the internals of the mechanism clarifies that.
        That and the fact I have 2 of them and I know how they behave.

      Probably because the end that connects to the charger has smarts in it to independently charge the 3 connected devices using the relevant standard for the connected device.

      This is effectively 3 chargers built into a retractable form factor.
      The charger you connect the cable to is not directly charging the devices you connect to the cable.

        I've no idea about the technicals of it, but that's not up to the consumer and the manufacturer haven't stated the limitations of this anywhere.
        If you have a standard USB-C to USB-C cable that you currently charge your phone with, you can use either end of it to charge.
        For the layman, that's the level of understanding most people will have going into this.

        So I was just pointing it out in case someone runs into the same problem as me.

        I don't use either of mine anymore as I found them more trouble than they were worth.

            @spaceflight: I know you were, and I just said I don't know the technicals as I didn't crack open the casing, and I'm assuming you haven't either.
            When both didn't charge this way when tested, I already figured this was a limitation rather than a defect - hence giving people a heads up about the design.

            My point was, the average consumer isn't to know any of that and the behaviour deviates from a standard usb-c cable and may not fit for everyone's case - that's all.

    That sounds dangerous. It might work if everything is at 5V, but if one device negotiates a higher voltage you risk damaging other connected devices.

    • It does 5V 3.5A max if using 2 or 3 simultaneously. It's in the item description

      • There's no way the cable can guarantee that. It'd be up to the user to make sure nothing connected will negotiate higher.

          • @cooni: How do you expect it to? Do you really think they'd have the active electronics in the splitting component necessary to detect when there's more than one device connected and block negotiation? What if the voltage has already been negotiated higher and someone connects an extra device? At a minimum you'd need several mosfets in there to keep power cut off, and looking at the photos there's no way there's enough room for that.

            Also, if there was that level of (hugely complex) active protection they'd definitely advertise it.

            No, this thing is just plain unsafe to use with more than one device connected, unless you can guarantee that either no device will negotiate higher or the supply can't provide higher than 5V. And none of that will be enforced by the cable.

            e: Looking at the page on desktop (mobile site cut it off early) they do advertise some form of active circuitry. I still highly doubt it properly handles multiple connected devices, but I also don't have one to test so I can't say for sure anymore. If anyone buying this has one of the more advanced USB testers (that includes a PD trigger) I'd be interested in seeing the results of the test: trigger a higher voltage on the USB-C end and measure what's coming out of the Micro-USB.

            • @elusive: You're assuming it's all just dumb wires connected in parallel so if one negotiates 9V then there's 9V active on all lines. That won't be the case and it doesn't take a huge amount of circuitry to achieve this.

              It doesn't "properly" handle multiple devices it all - it caps out at 5V 3.5A per plug.

                And how do you propose they did this? Keep in mind that this claims to be 100W-capable, i.e. it needs to support 20V/5A. Are you suggesting they perform a further conversion inline to keep the other two plugs powered at a lower voltage? Or that they disable the other two plugs when a higher voltage has been negotiated? Or that they reset the voltage negotiation if they detect a second device has been connected (therefore limiting all three to 5V in this case)?

                It must be one of those three in order to both satisfy "can do 20V when negotiated" and "can safely handle multiple devices even if one tries to negotiate a higher voltage". All three methods are possible, sure, but I'm not exactly convinced they've implemented them in the space available.

                e: now that I think about it some more, the "disable the other two plugs" approach is probably the simplest and could be done independently at the non-C plug ends. But then that would prevent those ones from doing any >5V fast charging at all (e.g. QC on the micro).

                • @elusive: It doesn't do multiple voltages across plugs. It clearly states when using 2 or 3 together all you get is 5V @ 3.5A max.

                  When doing higher voltages, the others are disabled.
