Creating a website - help?

Hi Guys,

my other have has started a business and is looking at creating a website.

I know absolutely nothing about creating a web page and was hoping some of you might be able to point me in the right direction?

some questions I have:

do we need it to be 'hosted'?

are there free templates we can use for layout?

  • the business doesnt sell anything so wont be an online shop - just a basic site that showcases services and allows people to contact him online to book jobs/get quotes.

Any help is really appreciated!

    1) Yes a site needs to be hosted. This is how you get your web space.

    2) Usually with some poking around on the net for free templates you'll find some. But this doesn't help sell the originality of the company in some ways.

    If they are serious I'd advise them to contact a web design company or a freelancer. I'm a freelancer for web design but as free advice..you get what you pay for when it comes to websites, if you get my drift?

      Agree with pikapika. I usually get my templates from http://themeforest.net/ for high quality ones if my clients prefer using templates for quick turnaround (I'm web developer, not web designer, so templates are my best friend here :)). For more personalised website (and if you have the funds), hiring a web designer is the solution.

    pikapika - can you give me any idea of the price range I could expect getting a freelancer or web design company to do it?

    Have a look at themeforest for really good templates.

    Use wordpress so you can edit the site yourself without having to know code.

    Scotkat: Some more things to think about when you are considering your options, what (if any) on going support will exist, what capacity will it have, and how would you go about changing any of the details?

      Exellent advice, most people get a site up and then cannot make changes, without high cost/major hassles etc.
