Choosing an Amp for Passive Speakers

I inherited a couple of Yamaha NS-E50 passive speakers - Spec here https://sg.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/1/333601/N…

I’m not an audiophile so don’t quite understand how to choose a correct amplifier. I believe I may need a 2 channel, 2 x 50w amp? Would this one be suitable?

I understand the output connections are different, that I can sort, I just want to know if the amp would be suitable. TIA

  • Those are effects speakers for use in a surround system. They'll sound awful if used as mains.

  • That amp will work fine but, as pointed out above, the speakers are quite tinny (4 inch single woofer with limited bass range). Don't expect a full set of acoustic experience out of them.

  • Thanks guy’s appreciate the replies, seems these will be quite useless to me so. What would be a good entry level speaker (budget :-) ) that could be wall mounted.

    • For music, TV, movies? Effects speakers can be wall or ceiling mounted, but mains are best mounted on stands or floor-standing.

      • Music

        • iOS or Android?

          • @sumyungguy: iOS, although they can be a “dumb” speaker. I will be connecting them (via the amp) to an old Apple AirPort Express to enable airplay functionality

            • @Chippy47: I'm gonna add some assumptions: you prefer modern music and already stream from Apple Music or Spotify; you don't own a collection of vinyl or CDs. My tip: get a stereo pair of Homepods from Apple's refurb store, investment $818. Audio is wholly subjective, so if you can find something you like for less that's the way to go.

              • @sumyungguy: Thanks for your efforts and advice mate.

                • @Chippy47: Look into the Bose or Sonos ecosystem where you can keep adding to them and even do different zones or group them together

    • A good speaker would need to be placed away from the wall. Very few good/ audiophile speaker are designed to be places close to walls.
If you want to wall mount go with sonos or similar.

  • Another option is a used Sonos Play 5 Gen 1. They're quite cheap now. They put our an amazing sound for the price you pay on the used market. I have a $10 000 amp and speaker combo and the Sonos gets me to about 80% of that (at normal listening levels) for $100.

    • Not true. You could easily surpass the sound quality of sonos with amps, speakers, source for under $2k.
But this is usually bulky, needs specific room acoustics. Sonos will manage to work in most environments.

      • Yea, what im saying is the used priced of the 5 is $100. You don't get 20x the sound quality spending $2000.

    • I too rate Sonos Play 5 and was intending to suggest them to OP but first checked some recent reviews…

  • +1

Try the yammies on the amp first before you write them off as audio shite

  • you could go and try your luck at a thrift store they sell receivers and stereos quite cheap and are usually not too hard to get back your money if it doesn't work as intended
