Cascade Mountain Ultralight Packable Highback Camp Chair $39.99 (Was $69.99) @ Costco (Membership Required)

I have a couple of these and they are very light and comfortable. They are a little fiddly to put together and you need a little bit of strength to stretch the canvas to slide onto the last pole, but they would be good if you need to walk a little distance from the car or go hiking.

  • from the images they dont seem that much smaller than the bunnings $5 chairs?

    • Can I ask which Bunnings chairs you're referring to? Would like to take a look.

    • These ones have decent back support.

    Ultralight

    1.5kg

Whilst relatively light in the context of a normal camping chair, I wouldn't be calling this "Ultralight". There are much more lighter (albeit more expensive) options that would be more fitting to the "ultralight" category.

Checkout Chair Zero from Helinox it weighs 490grams. About $150ish when on sale. It's a favourite over in r/ultralight

    • They're a good compromise on weight and comfort, but yes not really ultralight compared to a helix. I've got 2 of these that I leave in my car and use at the kids soccer games and for picnics. The high back and drink bottle pocket are nice features, and the light weight means it's easy to carry a few along with other gear.

    • Helinox Chair Zero is pretty uncomfortable for my frame, and more comparable would be the Helinox Chair Zero High Back which clocks in at 690g, I also found this one uncomfortable or the most direct comparison is the Helinox Sunset which clocks in at 1475g which is more comparable in materials and shape.

  • Looking at that I guarantee my fat drunk ass would be on the floor in about 4 minutes

  • These look pretty flimsy. Has anyone tried these?

    • I’ve got a couple of them; they seemed fine to me. If you don’t like them you take them back and get a refund.

The quality for this style of chair is quite good, but you're probably sacrificing some durability for weight savings when compared to more traditional camping chairs. The chair sways/flexes a little when you're sitting on it. I've got a pair and they've lasted a season of kids soccer games and some occasional picnic use with no signs of wear. I'm 90kg and I don't feel like it's about to break when I sit on it, but I don't let my kids jump around on them.

Some other observations - they blow over in heavy wind if no one is sitting on them (when a normal chair wouldn't) due to the lighter weight and high back. They also take a little while to setup and pack away. It's not too bad if you you're just setting up one, but it's annoying if you have 5 say for a family and have to setup them all up yourself (as the fabric is a little too tight for small kids to manage).

      • Have something similar, and I have to agree.. Takes way longer to pack.. Went back to just bringing my bunnings chairs when camping.. Left these in the boot for "just in case" moments..
