How to Disassemble The Door from The Pocket (Sliding) Door System

Hi all.

I have a problem with a pocket(sliding) door.
I want to replace new rollers.
The roller screws falling off from the door so door doesn't close properly.

I remove door trim but it looks the trims screwed on the metal frame.
How they screwed from metal frame to wood trim

Can anyone have an idea how to take door out

I have attached a few photos

Same problem here. I found it best to just leave it, kinda fun watching annoying housemates try to slam a broken sliding door. Treat the house like a hotel and I'll treat your door like a slumlord.

Not sure but have you tried removing the sliding door first (not just the trims)? If you carry/lift the entire door upward (get someone to lift from the bottom if you don't have access to grip from both sides), you should be able to then slide it out horizontally and gain access to the rail and screws beneath.

    • Sorry one of pictures is duplicate so if you look 3rd picture. The door is bigger, I think I need remove the trim first.

You usually lift the doors to remove them.

    • I was thinking too but it is quite tight.

  • Any tracks at the bottom of the door? If not the check the top track while door is partially open to see if theres a way to release the door from the track or roller?

The frame is usually built in to the wall in one pre assembled piece.

The door hangs from rollers. Normally there is a way to undo the door from the rollers. There should be a bolt to raise and lower the door to adjust it. Some have a plastic clip (cam lock thingy) that you need to push aside and the door will drop off the roller. The roller should then have a place to drop out of the track near the door jam.

You may need to work out how to hold the door up and the roller down to get to the mechanism.

Try YouTube. Surely there’s a how to remove or fit a sliding door video or seven. Watch a few.

Mine has a similar setup but in my case, the piece of trim on one side of the door track at the top was installed independently of other trim and shorter than the sides of the jamb with two screws recessed into the bottom (under nylon caps) holding it to the top jamb. So other than running a stanley knife along the paint that had joined it, all I had to do was remove those screws / that top piece of timber on one side, then I could get an open-ended spanner in the gap above the door below the head to undo the screws/bolts on top of the door to tighten or remove as required (as they were the type that a spanner can undo from the side) …

However it looks in your case:
    - Your installer may have been a bit special and decided it would never need removing; and/or
    - it may be hard as the screws/bolts are coming out so are sticking up too high to get the spanner onto;

But in theory, you just have to figure out what order they put the trims and doors together and work backwards….
but if he built the sides of the jamb after (which it looks like in this case), you may have to cut that top piece inside of the line of the vertical jambs then unscrew or lever it off downwards to get better access if you don't want to remove the sides to make it like it should have been built.

Or it may be a case of, "if it jambs, force it, if it breaks, then it needed replacing anyway"

However my fix of tightening them back up only lasted about 6 months - I need to replace them with something larger as it is stripped out I think. So when you do get it off, get something hefty to fix it once!

    • It looks to me like the trim piece is not there. Either already removed, or wasn’t installed.

  • Normal process is to remove just the top trim cover - couple of screws.
Undo the bottom guides - little plastic things on the floor.
Lift door from rollers and bring it out from the pocket frame.

You may need to loosen the rollers-particularly if they have been pushed up as the rollers have worn.
Helps to put some webbing strap under the door to support it and help it angle out of the pocket.

But - over the years weird and wonderful things may have been added to your door as trims, spacers etc and you may need to work your way through them - the interweb may be your friend here.
If you need to remove trims, use a scraper to gently ease them out. Don’t use a screwdriver….

    Good luck👍

Modern systems don’t lift the door off the track. The rollers get slotted into the track then the door is hung from the rollers, like in the video linked by geek001

This looks kinda like your door. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsKC79aTd1I

At about the 4 min mark, that is how the door is put on, maybe you can figure out how to reverse the process. Good luck.

    • That’s the type of roller I see from the pics. Track is recessed into the frame. You don’t remove the frame.

  • when I did mine I undid the centre bolts. It took forever.
