SA Bus Commuters Overcharged Because of Failure to Update Daylight Savings Time.

I saw this on today's news. How incompetent can someone be to do such a biggie?

The IT blunder involved new tap and pay machines on all of the state's 750 public buses, which didn't switch over to the correct time when daylight saving kicked in.

This resulted in some commuters being charged at peak rates until 10am, meaning they paid between 30 cents to $1.85 more than they should have for a one-way fare.

If this happened at a private company surely someone would have lost their job.

My opinion is, people should take their jobs seriously, for this kind of mistakes to be avoided.
I understand mistakes happen. But this kind of mistakes could easily be avoided.

The good news is that:

All commuters are set to have a day of free travel next week network-wide in the way of an apology.

The free travel day is yet to be finalised.

Must be a slow news day then…

It took them only 4 days to report it 😄

        That's quick for SA

  • They didn't test to see whether daylight savings would update correctly on the machines this year because it worked last year. That's their story.

    • That's laziness to me. Some people get paid a shitload of money to pretty much bludge around.

      • You do realise that's like 90% of Australia right?

And just another reason why they need to axe this stupid concept… that, and the extra sunlight fades my curtains…

    • No, just learn to code.

Buses should be free. They'll save money on all this stuff. Just tax the businesses whose employees use it, the shops whose customers use it, and for poor people just tax the businesses again. Buses, trams, and trains are free in SA for seniors and it costs like 1.7 million dollars a year only. A rounding error in the state budget.

    • you could listen to transport minister's comment on that

"making it free would mean Metro system is worthless "

They probably looking at other states, look at Sydney, Melbourne there the public transport is so expensive (and unreliable in sydney too)

      • But it’s not worthless. Malls get so many customers by bus that interchanges are built in them. And 90% of full buses are workers getting to work.

        • unfortunately Minster is the one in power, He controls those kinda decision if that is free or not.
And much as SA residents want free travel, Minister and government dont want to loose money from people who pay for it.

Heck if it was free I might actually start to travel with Bus (100 mins one way to uni) instead of car that (30-40 mins one way to uni)

          • @USER DC: Less cars on the road would be a win! Less traffic jam and more quick/ serene travels.

          • @USER DC: Yup, plus you can get a charge on before you commute without breaking any laws.

That's the dumbest thing ever, public transport is already subsidised by taxes.
No one is paying you to make comments here, does that make your comment worthless?

You're the person who was saying instead of customers who use restaurants on Sunday paying the Sunday surcharge they should just factor it into their regular prices and charge everyone on all days a higher amount to cover for it.

What is it with you and "designing the most impractical business models that would be a costly nightmare to execute correctly, because you wouldn't be able to tell if they were actually working or not"? Are you a BIG4 consultant?

How do you measure "which businesses are causing you to have this busride today, so we can tax them"? Ask everyone who is getting on the bus to fill out a brief "what is the purpose of your trip today?" survey before they get on? How do you know people are telling the truth? Wouldn't it take forever to get onto a bus compared with the 2 second tap and pay we have right now?

      • The surcharge is impractical. Plenty of businesses factor in increased weekend and public holiday rates into their normal price. Coles do it, even though the entire staff and security need to be paid more. McDonald's do it even though they employee like a billion people. It's not hard to math out what to charge every day to cover the year's costs, just raise the price of everything by 1.6% or whatever.

        • How about we just focus on your current wild idea.. explain to the room how "what people use buses for" is reliably and quickly collected… then we can move on to the other problems with the idea.

          • @CrowReally: I caught a bus once and it was full of workers and shoppers.

            • @AustriaBargain: Wait until you find out those same workers and shoppers then ate lunch in a cafe on a Sunday, more taxes to charge to their employers/places they visited beforehand!

  • Private companies do run the buses in SA, and I doubt anyone will lose their job. I'm not sure why you would think privatised services are any better.

    • There aren't any better. What I was trying to say on this post is: Why people don't take their jobs seriously (whatever that job is)?
Why are people that are not qualified have a specific job (high paying job) ?

That's some of the questions in mind.

      • Because a lot of people seem to do the bare minimum to get paid, and take no pride in doing a good job. I think that's probably always been the case. Also, the average IQ is 100, which means 50% of the population fall below that unimpressive bar.
