"For new users who have never installed the Temu app"

    • +19

Considering how dodgy the app looks, no one should ever install it lol. There is a reason they push it so hard =P

      • +1

You mean to tell me that you don't trust an app for a company that is owned by a parent company which had their app taken off the play store for having malware?

        • +2

As they say in China… 能骗就骗

(if you can cheat, then cheat)

      • +2

        Shop like billioneer

    • Oh Jayz sir it's an honor, thank you for that

  • +18

Woohoo, half price landfill supplied by slave labour and I get bonus spyware, sign me up!

    • +9

Hey it's better than full price landfill

      • +2

People never seem to understand this, our local shops are full of overpriced landfill quality products too.

        • +2

Yep, everything on temu and ali can be found on amazon and ebay for double/triple/quadruple the price

        • +3

Oh absolutely, I went to the Reject Shop last week, needed to take a shower after I felt so gross

        • +1

          What's your point?

        • At least the full-priced landfills usually don't straight-up lie about the nature of them being one

  • +3

I see al these discounts and cashbacks, but I've yet to see anything worth BUYING with these discounts

    • Just bought some car seat covers, the exact same ones on eBay are three times the price. They probably buy it from Temu lol or at least the same Chinese factories.

    • AliExpress new user discount always beats Temu.

      • What's a good current new user discount for AliExpress? I have a spare phone number handy..

        • +1

Just sign up and look at anything with a welcome deal.

        • How good are those Boost deals!
Don't forget to grab another $10 off JB Perks

          • @cook99: Yep as long as I actually get the cash back lol
            Cheers I did forget that!!

      • not even new user discount, almost everything i find worth buying is straight up ~20% cheaper on aliexpress without any fluffing with discount/cashback.

      • Ive found the opposite.
When you get a decent temu coupon deal spend $19 get all these coupons.

Bought a pair of digital water temp gauges from ebay.
Cost nearly double the pair i bought from temu.
Amd here in 10 days not 10 months from aliexpress
Ebay instructons were a different brand vut had the temu brand name on the instructions

        • Aliexpress can also deliver in 10 days, it depends which supplier you buy from.

    • I bought a metal watchband for ~$7, and it's pretty decent. I also got one of those balanced, stick-figure desk ornaments for ~$4.

Both were certainly worth the money.

      • A metal/magnetic watchband on eBay is the same price? assuming it's somewhat similar.

Cheaper with eBay Plus too, and I don't have to deal with a predatory app. Not really convincing me of a worthwhile deal if all you're getting is import trinkets.

        • It's the sort of metal watchband you'd typically see on watches.

          Similar to this:

What's worth buying is different to everyone, and people should of course use PayPal or some other payment method that obfuscates your details to a degree.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/17/temu-accused-of-data-risks-a…

Dodgy as, all they promote is getting others onto downloading the app and it's hard to actually claim their promotions

  • -2

China already has all of your data.. and using the promotions has been super easy, apply promotion and done.

  • Not really a deal considering they do in app offers like this a lot. If we posted every TEMU deal, ozbargain would be cntemubargain

  • +1

    Long live president XI

  • +7

I would go as far as even suggesting Temu gets banned from ozBargains….

  • Yeh thanks, I will stick to AliExpress.

  • +2

Comparing to Aliexpress, Temu has faster shipping, no tax and easy return policy.
Otherwise it's not much different from any other Chinese marketplace. You need to be vigilant, read reviews carefully and don't give them your credit card info.

  • +1

Chinas state sponsored spyware march makes it all so simple for them.

Tiktok, temu, rootkit malware in valorant, tencent simply buying everything from shares of reddit to most major game publishers for free access to all their data, the list goes on, and on, and nobody cares to stop it. Selling off half our farms and utilities to them…meanwhile can you buy so much as a 1 bedroom apartment with a shared laundry anywhere in China? Can you (profanity). Its a one way street buddy.

  • +2

Downvoting due to proven dodgy practices. Avoid this application

  • +7

Vote to Ban TEMU from Ozbargain, please.

    • And you havent seen scam email when amazon sold our details? you have been living under a rock mate?

  • Yeah Temu have been well documented to be highly intrusive as others have said. expect to get hacked if you use it. Avoid this trash

  • Honestly I don’t mind the cheap and good stuff, the same stuff in local stores is priced at 2X (not including thrift and 2nd stores)

As for the malware issues, look I’m already giving my data to google and apple, I don’t mind it sharing it with some chinese app

Before I knew all the full blown privacy concerns, I bought a bunch of items for under $50 delivered. The order arrived very quickly and all the products (6 in total) were as described and of a better quality than I expected for the price I paid.

One of the items in my order was a dashmat for my car, however I didn't realise that the dashmat was for the American market (left hand drive). I did the returns thing, and got the dashmat refunded at no cost to me (free return shipping). The refund arrived in my PayPal account about 9 days later.

Just thought I would share my experience for those who aren't concerned about the privacy risks, and are considering buying something from there.

Thanks OP - tried in app (using a clean flashed ROM) but code didn't work. Guess that means Temu collects very detailed device info including your IMEI (not surprised given its a Chinese company).

Used new email + old mobile number on Chrome (mobile) browser and it worked! Definitely much better option than the upsized cashbacks as they risk rejection (+ time delay), in this case, the price was cheaper than AliExpress.

  • Can anyone link to an article explaining the purported risks? The CNBC one linked above talks about a sister company's app which was found outside of the app stores containing malware and asking for too many permissions. Temu on my phone currently has no permissions allowed. With the calls to ban Temu deals from OzBargain, I'd like to know where the fear is coming from and what makes it different from any other foreign operated marketplace. My experience shopping with them has been very positive, faster delivery than Ali, free, and products just as cheap.

    • then just dont use the app, we bought from temu more than 10 times now using incognito browser and its fine
