Insurance - Income Protection and TPD Exclusions

I received an extremely belated life insurance cover update outlining exclusions to my insurance.

I spent nearly 12 months from the start of my application in 2020 to Nov 2021, providing evidence from my GP and MRI scans, all outlining in their evidence that there were no health issues after a bout of vertigo. We spent several months going back and forth on the phone to confirm that all results were reviewed, and I followed up with additional tests and neurologist review as requested. All again indicating good health, which was finally acknowledged.

Now, nearly 23 months after my approval, I have received an 'update letter' outlining their belated apologies of exclusions to my cover for income protection and TPD for any issues to do with any mental health issues or any issues to my spine or brain. There was absolutely nothing to suggest these exclusions nor were they recommended 23 months ago.

Any advice on how to get these removed from my account without having the need to spend another 12 months proving my health status?

That seems like a lot of effort and expense to get life insurance.

my cover for income protection and TPD

Is this cover linked to your Super account or is it a standalone insurance policy that's totally unrelated? (Your options will depend on whether this cover is inside or outside of Super)

  • Its within my Super account. Just curious if there was any way to mitigate the need to go through the process again when the decision was appoved initially and then due to their 'belated' letter they issue me with the random exclusions. They have since asked for an additional current health assessment but I am reluctant due to the lengthy process again and financial expenditure to prove it all again, not to mention a bit peeved for their belated nearly 2 year delay in informing me of said restrictions.
Please ignore the frustration:) I appreciate your feedback.

Did you tell them about pre-existing conditions or similar? I've never heard of such hoops to jump through for superannuation insurance. Then again it's not something I've ever discussed amongst my peers either.

    • can feel your frustration.
but going "through super" for income protection / TPD == a world of pain.
They really don't like handing over money.

I know that first hand (income protection).
This was insurance provided within my super fund by TAL LIFE.

It's like fighting tooth and nails … took over to 6 months +++ soo much of my time/phonecalls.
If seriously looking again == always best to go outside super funds for such services.

Other than that - sorry, can't help.
It is also alittle hard to unravel your story.

    • What does vertigo have to do with mental illness, brain or spine issues?

Usually the exclusions would only apply to the amounts above the Auto-Acceptance Limit. Is this the case for your policy?

  • I got that insurance through my super. It was automatic, I must have ticked a box when I transferred the super and they didn't ask me anything.

Did you have the super before and just requested the insurance now?

Any advice on how to get these removed

    Pay a higher premium maybe?

  • I'd be more worried about what they discovered about my spine…

  • Think about it this way, if it is this hard to get cover then how will claiming be?
