Do third party docks still fry the switch, i remember it used to be a common issue 3-4 ish years ago

    • +3

I reckon so. No incentive for these manufacturers to change the design given how sporadic the issue is. And if they did they'd surely advertise it.

Edit: So apparently its third party power adapters that were causing the issues and not the dock itself. If you use an official power adapter with a third party dock you shouldn't be at risk.

As far as I'm aware, nobody has come up with a better explanation than this on how and why 3rd party docks bricks the Switch:

Surprisingly, bricking seems to comes down to corner cutting more than proprietary algorithms. The prevailing theory that the Switch isn’t PD compliant has very little to do with docking actually, and the power consumption of a docked Switch and a non-docked Switch is generally pretty consistent, maxing out at 18W. The inconsistencies of power draw and PD protocol errors are easily managed by the PD chip.

A much more common reason for bricking, are those third party docks that are cutting corners and not actually implementing dedicated PD controllers. For example, the Nyko dock itself uses a microcontroller that emulates the PD protocol and signal input/output voltages. Nyko’s PD emulator sends 9V to the Switch through the CC pin to the M92T36M, putting it 3V higher than the 6V max rating on the M92T36 which leads to a bricking Russian Roulette.

I believe using the official power adapter could slightly reduce the risk, since by design it's normally supposed to only output the voltages that are safe for the Switch. But when 3rd parties are using some sort of emulation as a substitute for a real PD chip, there's no guarantee that their solution won't find a way to output the wrong voltage to your Switch anyway.

It was power adapters frying the switch, not using the correct ones. Just get one that supports above what the docked mode needs ( can't remember off the top of my head, but basically any 65w + one should work fine do your own research, I'm not being held accountable for any fried switches )

      • nope, both.
it also due to doggy dock/hub, also due to incorrect charger voltage/wattage
just play safe, use "one original, either the dock or the charger.. dont use both 3rd party

  • DONE DEAL! I bought it because it looks cool

    • yeah i like it too but i know it will be just collecting dust after a week unless i replace the orignal dock with this, but then the original will be collecting dust.
unless i buy another switch console without dock from japan (the unpatched). if $15 maybe i bite but not for $37

Order cancelled - thanks for the advice.

Wish Nintendo would release better dock designs. It's been 6 years

  • "100 Gigabit Ethernet LAN"

    • Very, very impressive. Lol.

Had one of these, returned it since after about 5 seconds of zero issues - the display turned off and on every 2-5 seconds - killed the experience.

Owned one of these. Constantly get static charge (zap) when interacting with it to plug/unplug. It would disconnect from TV each time and make me not want to use it anymore. I guess its not shielded properly.

  • Nice! This will replace my older Skull & Co that doesn't work with the Oled.

    • Nice? sure? have you read few posts above you…. or you just stuff all and that and buy first think later?
