any horror stories with namecheap? am i going to have troubles transferring my domain name out, if necessary, after the year is up?

    • +3

None with me and they normally have pretty good comments online.. i have over 35 domains with namecheap.

    • +2

It'll be rare to find one. Namecheap is prob the cheapest/best registrar you can find. Got 50+ domains there.. Godaddy survivor here.

  • Free privacy protection is a plus

    • it's confusing. it says free whoisguard protection but also says "whoisguard" is 1.85/yr and elsewhere it is 2.88/yr

its free for the first year..

signed up and got one :)
all good. just have to remember to untick the box to automatically renew subscription if you dont want more than the one year

  • Thanks, got one.

  • Thanks for the awesome find, just got myself a .99 cent domain.

  • The box to enter the code is at the right on the shopping cart page, before you click checkout. Took me a while to find.

  • Got one, thanks OP… sweet deal!

  • Looks like 1&1 has .com domain names for $0.99 too (including private domain registration): https://www.1and1.com/domain-names?linkOrigin=&linkId=ct.sta… - Not sure if transfers are at the same price though.

    • some of the comments for 1&1 in previous deals are worrying though

Cool. I now have my very own URL. What will do with it? Do not know. Thx anyway!

    • saverman.com?

      • Not quite.

  • Anyone know how long a domain transfer to namecheap.com will take?

    • Depends on the registrar you are transferring out from, they have to release it by 5 days but some release it earlier.

  • Are people still registering domains in 2012? What's even left…?

    • +3

      njninjar.com is!!!

  • +1 for creepiest coupon code yet.

  • How much is it after the year is up?

  • +1

Awesome, just got myself another domain…starting to pile up like scout badges… one day I'll use 'em or make millions from them! Cheers

Any advice on how to host the website?
    I've registered the domain name.
    Sorry newbie to websites.

    • +1

If you have good enough internet/computer you can host yourself however it should be easier just to buy hosting.
Its a ongoing cost but there are plenty out there for less than $5/month.
read a few reviews and choose for yourself. I personally got a year for $1 from here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/70709

      • How would you host yourself?

I have an unlimited internet. Would I need a dedicated computer running 24/7?

        Thanks for your help :)

        • +1

No… the computer only needs to be on when you want people to access the website :)

    • +2

i suggest you don't host it yourself.

keep your website and home traffic separate. for an adsl connection, the upstream will be limited to 1024 kbps so if you serve any substantial content it will be slow to load.

also configuring/securing your server requires knowledge. you will have no cpanel and you will have to install everything yourself.

running your computer running 24/7 will cost $.

for basic low-traffic www and email there are free hosting sites available i think.

or you could wait for some of the cheap (eg $1 for 1/yr) hosting deals that appear on ozbargain every so often.

  • awesome! thanks for sharing mate!
    keep em coming

  • Dammit, missed out by 14 minutes :(

  • yea dam I missed out also :/

  • namecheap certainly has a nice management interface

  • Unable to apply coupon code. Coupon code has already expired.

  • I honestly have no idea what to do with my domain. How do I upload html for the peoples to view???

Edit: answer appears to be for me to buy hosting. Damn it!! More costs.
