Asus Eee PC1015BX-WHI175S Seashell $238 Harvey Norman

71

Saw a national Harvey Norman sale ad on tv earlier advertising this and flew down to the Loganholme, Qld branch and snapped it up.

Sales guy told me the sale dosnt start till tomorrow but he'd make an exception. On the shelf for $342 so its over $100 off. Tried to sell me extended warranty for $79, told him i dont have any more cash on me and he told me i can pay it tomorrow.

Was in the market for a cheap netbook but dont know if this is any good or not. Any ideas?

You flew down?? Lol did the flight cost more than the laptop? :P

      Red Bull gave me wings!

  • I just saw the ad on tv whilst eating dinner.
Said UP TO 40% off all ASUS laptops, netbooks AND ultrabooks!

Just came here to see if it had been posted yet.

  • Has a HDMI port, that's definitely a plus imo! Most Eee PCs have VGA only, CPU is 'ok' & it has Windows 7 Starter. For $238 its a pretty good deal imo for a non gaming netbook

Only downside that stopped me is this.. 1 GB of RAM.

    Memory DDR3, 1 x On Board Memory, 1GB/2GB *4

*4 : The memory is fixed on the motherboard and there is no SO-DIMM on the motherboard. The On Board Memory is unable to be removed or replaced for extending.

    • Yeah im disappointed bout that too. Really wanted to double the RAM.

    • complete retarded crack smoking move, they really dont want to sell this thing

    • Nope not this model

  • 1024*600 but otherwise pretty good price for a cheapo netbook.

    • Resolution doesnt play well with Windows 8

      • It works, but metro apps won't work unless you do the registry tweak & get res. higher than 1024x768.

  • the cpu does hold some record

the slowest dual core ever sold commercially rofl

gpu is the only saving grace here

TERRIBLE, nasty piece of hardware. stay away. my sister bought this a few months back and its absolutely dreadful. I'd really recommend trying to find a cheap HP dm1z with a similiar form factor (11 inch) for between $300-400. much better value imho! :)

  • haha, I have an intel netbook(n550) and its pretty slow. First thing, you will really benefit if the ram is upgradable, or else if painfully slow. Also, if you are really looking for a netbook, I think you should really go with intel(if price doesn't differ by much) because they are a bit faster. And because when I say its slow, its really slow, so a bit increase in performance will definitely be a welcome.

    • then again, I will say my netbook is pretty usable if its not for heavy usage, but I think getting a dual core intel netbook should be a bare minimum.

      • Agree with both francis.tks' comments. I am writing this on the single core N450 Intel netbook that I bought on 7/10/10. At first it was excruciatingly slow.
Increasing the RAM from 1Gb to 2Gb made only a slight improvement.
Replacing its drive with a Seagate XT hybrid hard drive (small SSD + spinning HDD) noticeably improved its speed. Boot time dropped over 50%. So whatever you buy suggest allow $ for a hard drive upgrade either to a hybrid or an SSD. Putting the drive you remove in a cheap caddy gives you a backup drive too!
Note that 1024 x 768 resolution is minimum to support Win8 natively. Have not yet found a 10" netbook that has it, so consider looking for a 11"+ screen that has.
Despite all that, your choice seems reasonable value.

        • Win8 will install and work on netbook res, just isnt the nicest to work with

  • Had ASUS intel n550 netbook. bought it from HN with extended warranty for $250 + $50 combined with AMEX $ 50 cash back a year and half ago. It was a bit slow even after 2GB ram upgrade.

It fail a month and half ago just after the 1yr period. So sent it HN Product care, they said they will give me store credit for $250. But when i got to HN Moorabbin i was told that i can only spend the store credit in their section (computers, tablets and cameras).
Not sure whether i should buy this!

  • Is the sale online too?

  • I have a similar netbook with the AMD C-50/Radeon HD6250 platform. It's actually not too bad, does netbook type stuff fine and also plays most HD video flawlessly. That said, the first thing I did when I got it was put in another 2gb of ram, it was pretty crap with only 1gb.

I'm personally not fond of 1024x600 screens either.

    • Cant upgrade this model, RAM soldered in.

      • Yep, that'd probably be a deal breaker for me.

This is NOT a deal… the reason is tied up with Moore's Law.

It should have 2 GB RAM + 500 GB HDD + 6-cell battery.

  • im pretty tempted by this, would it be amply suitable for browsing ebay and ozbargain whilst on the road?
