M.2 NVMe SSD + Enclosure Recommendations

With kids, the time for my full ATX tower to leave my life has come.
I want to run a laptop for work and the odd entertainment when time allows.

Trying to move all my files into a portable HDD and noticed the common thing to do these days instead is m.2 nvme plus enclosure from Amazon for $30odd.

Can I get some recommendations for a 2tb nvme m.2 and an enclosure?

Pref not to spend like $300 for an SSD, just a reliable mid end will do the trick

Thank you
Remy

  • Turn the full ATX tower into a NAS.

NVMe drives are fine for high speed high capacity transfer - but for entertainment media they are still overpriced relative to HDD. Robust and error protected media win out.

    • I am also trying to save every little space I can in our tiny apartment ha ha maybe for all our photos and video files perhaps I might have to consider one of those wdd my passport drives?

  • +1

    2TB MP34 (TLC SSD): https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B095PMX6JS/
    Orico M2PV Enclosure (comes with USB-A to USB-C and USB-C to USB-C cables): https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08G14NBCS

Very very happy with both of these. $175 combined.

    • There are plenty of 2TB M.2 SSDs cheaper than that.

Like the PNY CS1031 2TB from Centre.com for $109 delivered. Its slow, but its way fast enough for a USB connection.

      • just a reliable mid end will do the trick

That is not a mid end drive my friend. That's bottom of barrel!

        • You don't need even mid end performance if its just going to be plugged into to USB enclosure. Even the slowest NVMe drives are faster than USB.

          • @GordonD: Thanks for this, it's been a decade and a half since I've built anything so I am trying to climb my way back up to the modern times from the ice age. If it's safe stable enough and is faster than a usb3.1 then I think I'll be happy.
Back then my crucial SSD had a higher crash rate than the other brands, I took a gamble to run just Steam and I haven't had an issue since. Lucky or not let's just say I'm safe ha ha. I'll have a look at both mentioned
