Does eBay Have a Compulsory Refund or Cancellation Policy or Is It up to Each Seller to Determine Their Policy?

Wondering if ebay has a sitewide refund or cancellation policy that sellers must adhere to or is it like gumtree where there are no rules and each seller has their own rules and terms?

My specific scenario is simple I just bought something I wish I had not and messaged the seller seconds after and got the response we cannot do anything as item has already been shipped which i can understand that is just good protocol and system.

But I guess I cannot get a refund now because they are saying it has been delivered and shipped?

Yeah I don't know what is everyone's experience with this.

Do/Should sellers have a small grace period or cancel/refund time period or is this a luxury and rarity.

Luckily the item is not too expensive but still having no ability to cancel or refund within seconds of purchasing seems kind of against normal trading laws in Australia.

Change of mind return/refund/cancellation is entirely up to the seller. This applies everywhere in Australia.
Next time think hard before you pay.

having no ability to cancel or refund within seconds of purchasing seems kind of against normal trading laws in Australia.

    What makes you think so?

I was just thinking of how stores operating IN Australia I think have to offer a refund policy.

Unless I am recalling that wrong.

Tbh I am just guessing and my knowledge might be outdated.

My ebay knowledge is very limited so i am asking here.

        Erm, no.
When I said sellers, that include stores (online or physical) as well. Those that offer change of mind refund do it as a gesture of good will.
It is not and has never been something they have to do by law.

Ah I see this is news to me thanks for the information.

          I appreciate it.

I must be mixing it up with cash only policies and refund options then my mistake.

  • Sellers have no legal obligation to offer a change of mind policy.

Does eBay Have a Compulsory Refund or Cancellation Policy or Is It up to Each Seller

It's up to the each seller. Read this article

Having sold on eBay for years I have always picked the no change of mind returns option when listing my items.

  • Wondering if ebay has a sitewide refund or cancellation policy that sellers must adhere

Not for what you want do.

But I guess I cannot get a refund now

Change of mind refunds is up to the seller, like ANY retailer in Australia, they don't have to accept change of mind return unless they want to.

If they accept them, then you will be paying shipping back to the seller.

Do/Should sellers have a small grace period or cancel/refund time period or is this a luxury and rarity.

Yes there is a unlimited grace period for you to change your mind BEFORE you click the button to buy it.

Luckily the item is not too expensive but still having no ability to cancel or refund within seconds of purchasing seems kind of against normal trading laws in Australia.

Then you would be wrong. Sure big stores like Kmart/Target/BigW do returns for change of mind, but they don't have to.

      Ah I see.

Thanks for the information this will be good for the future going forward.

Yeah in my case it was a case of I found the item I needed after hitting the buy button.

      Gotta love new housemates.

Was hoping for a refund in this occasion but I am now asking them for a feedback revision link as I left that an unfair negative review but am trying to change it to a positive one so they can start the refund process.

Thanks a lot this was very helpful for me.

You gave them a bad review for not refunding?

        • -2

not for just refunding but how they handled the communication on their side.. let us just say i was a douchebag and they were not the most helpful so mostly my fault

          • @AlienC:

            mostly my fault

            Wild

Anyway at least you realised and made steps to make it right I guess

            @AlienC:

            mostly my fault

Err it was all your fault….. Don't click buy if you don't want it.

            • @JimmyF: True this whole situation is my fault what a mess

  • Sellers on eBay specifies their return policy, it's either they accept return or they do not. Check the listing. If they do accept, then open return with change of mind, pay shipping then return the item, wait for it received for refund. If no return is specified, you can ask seller, if no response or no, then just resell and move on

  • Hell no.

I sell and use each of the monthly fee free listing as values are high, so "it's just a change of mind what's the big deal" means I waste a listing, and in turn lose out on $100s/item.

On another account are dropship items, order is automatically generated to fulfiller and any request from me to interrupt the process I get charged a 10% restocking fee no exceptions. Are you going to pay for that or is eBay going to help me get it from you? No.

Think twice, and think one more time going forward be the purchase $50k or $5.

I find most sellers do accept return, which should be seen as a luxury not an expectation.

Yep pretty much tl;dr be sure before hitting the buy button

I guess I'll just take this under mistakes I made column
